Literally everything people praise OoT for I have some kind of problem with. People say the puzzles are good. I think they’re boring and simplistic. People say the graphics are charming. I find them ugly. People say the music is good. I find it bland. People say the dungeons are fun. I find them tedious.

I need to understand why people like this game. There has to be something I’m missing. The world can’t really be full of people with such atrocious fucking taste that they actually think OoT is the best anything of all time, right? Right??

A game cannot objectively be good or bad. But subjectively hoards of people apparently feel so strongly about OoT that they’ve declared it the best game of all time in perpetuum, and I don’t understand what they’re seeing in it.

I want to understand. Because to me OoT is the video game equivalent of Ritalin.

All those elements congeal into an experience you can put yourself into and enjoy. But if you hate the puzzles, music, graphics, and dungeons - well, yeah the game isn't for you. It's a sense of adventure with a world that feels realised especially for an early 3d game. Even if the application of mechanics (puzzles, dungeons) you don't like, the mechanics themselves (movement, items, camera, orientation in a 3d world) are pretty fucking well done.

Also OPs a fag

I am a zoomer who really didn't grow up with OoT at all. I played it briefly on the Collector's Edition for GameCube and the 3DS Remake before fully completing it around 2015 on the N64. I think there are a lot of things that make the game great. I enjoy the character designs, the choice of colors, the various locales you can visit with distinct tribes in each area, and the expansive dungeons. I also greatly enjoyed the soundtrack too, it has impressive emotional range. Ultimately, these are all subjective reasons, so don't expect a magical answer that's going to convince you. I don't think it's a perfect game, but it's pretty good.

I like the Korok Forest theme and the boss themes, but otherwise I agree.

>dungeons
The shrines are kind of boring, but the game is clearly not as focused on them as its predecessors.

>the breaking weapons are annoying as fuck
It's an interesting mechanic, though. If weapons didn't break, you'd just use the same weapon for most of the game. When your weapons break, you are forced to improvise and adapt to the situation.

>horses are useless
Compared to what? I found them quite useful for exploring new areas.

Overall, BotW is overrated, but it's not a bad game.

I'm sure the version on GC was a later revision, but my N64 cart is a 1.0. Funnily enough, I had a friend who tried to purchase a 1.0/1.1 copy of the game. i agree. it is a cross between nostalgiafagging as hard as possible, and people having absolutely shit taste (much like others have pointed out, fortnite is popular, especially among kids). while their tastes may be completely different, the people that endlessly praise OoT have taste just as bad as people that praise fortnite. its just as bad, but in a different way. its pathetic. they both share the fact that its a giant flag that instantly lets you know that you can completely disregard that person's opinion on anything game related.

it was "cool at the time" and a landmark in video game history, sure, but its an ugly, clunky mess of a game.

>> No.9934741

>how can people love that more than TP or MM ?
most people think that a game is bad if they get stuck. botw provides a thousand square pegs to drop in square holes that are evenly placed apart like any good open world game should be. it's pure power fantasy dopamine. nobody says no, ever. the game just starfishes and says "do whatever you want, daddy". it's the ultimate game for the person who says they don't have enough spare time for games. it's pure sugar rush candy shit.

The combat design alone shreds your favorite game because the enemies are all well telegraphed and react to damage without relying on super armor and tracking.

quite frankly, people that say this shit can't back it up without pointing to some of the industry's best games as better examples. and that's why it's notable, even all this time later.

Hah. Enemies just stay put and occasionally strike you, and you just gotta wait a long time for them to reveal their weakness. You can spam hit them when their guard is up and it does nothing but delay them showing their weakness; the player faces no real punishment aside from time. In a much better game you'd be punished for making rash hits but nevertheless be able to make said hits.
