I finally managed to beat Gyruss on NES without the Konami code, I even had 6 lives left. There are only 2-3 moments in the game that can really drain your lives so you have to watch out for those.

SNES is my favorite for SHMUPs because

>Space Megaforce
Best overall classic SHMUP. Couldn't have been done on Genesis or TG16 because of controllers. The depth of the weapons, 64 in total with the setting button literally taking that number into the hundreds is amazing and gives you something else to do besides holding down the fire button. Quick speed change not hidden behind a pause menu keeps the action flowing. Super bomb oh shit button is there too. No one hit deaths, and you can touch walls without dying leading to a lot of mazy verticals levels that are super interesting with lots of hidden stuff in them. It's long too, with great unique music. Graphics alone are probably the most impressive of all 16 but SHMUPs.

Best pure game in the series. Hard as fuck.

Best two player SHMUP with lots of powerups, unique vehicles and strategy with the layers of the sky and ground.
