I've never played any of these games, what's the best PS1 entry in the series?

I’m over exaggerating to a degree but 2 isn’t so bad, just 3 has the best graphics, gameplay, aesthetics (by far), tracks and music. It’s better in every way, basically. 1 is really archaic in comparison, even to 2. If you had to get only one then I’d pick 3 by a long shot.

I'd say Wipeout XL if you're emulating or live in the NTSC region. If you live in the PAL region and you're playing on hardware go with Wipeout 3 Special Edition. I could never get into the PS2 games, probably something to do with the switchover from 50hz to 60hz TVs at the time.

Don't listen to him. Wipeout XL (2097 in PAL) is better than 3 and 3 Special Edition. But the internet jerks off to 3 because it is Wipeout's Ridge Racer Type 4 where it has pretty aesthetics and play time is extremely padded out. If you want a good game, stick to Wipeout XL and Rage Racer. Absolutely buy the shit out of it if it's cheap.
