Which of the non-ps2 retro megami tensei games are worth playing?

Was actually about to recommend this too, or at least the KMT versions. Based.

MTII and SMT are amazing games. SMT II is a slog and If... is also a slog.

I disagree SMT 1 is a slog., in fact megami tensei 2 is an objectively better game. SMT 2 is occult kino with some backtracking caveats, If.. is best played on a phone and treated like a handheld game.

Smt 1/2 have some amazing setpieces but they are kind of shitty as games

I would try the updated ports to see if you care for them at all mechanically but imo without the barren super famicom graphics it loses something special in the process

And SMT 1 isn't?

It's basically the same game. The only differences is that the remake has auto-mapping and lacks multiple demon encounters in a single fight. There's also some presentation differences, like the remake's very muddy palette as opposed to the bright and colorful NES version and (in my opinion) the music lacks the same sort of punch the NES version had.

Soul Hackers is retro, right? I think it aged pretty well while using some old mechanics.

>> No.9909753

If you don't have severe JRPG autism then probably just Soul Hackers. SMT2 has an incredible story that I'd love to see remade someday because the very limited music, sprites and gameplay do not do that plot justice. Read it for yourself on Wikipedia, it's very cool.

>Megami Tensei 2 there is a SNES version but I haven't played it.
>SMT 1 and 2, The ps1 version of 1 got translated recently
>Persona 1 and 2
>Soul hackers, the Saturn version doesn't have an English translation so the 3ds port will have to do. I find it the best of the Old style of megami tensei gameplay.

The backtracking is what killed SMT II for me, and I agree that MTII is better than SMT.
