Any examples? Like games you can tell are good and "really wanted to like," but couldn't, not because their flaws tipped the scales too far, but because you just couldn't mesh with what it was going for?

Like for me and RE3, the prospect of encountering Nemesis and having that make a significant dent in my health or ammo resources always makes me too anxious to finish the game. It's for that exact reason that I think Nemesis is a GOOD inclusion, because it logically builds on the sort of planning anxiety that the series operated on. But adding Nemmy to the mix, while brilliant in how it tops off that design philosophy, just makes it to where I'm not having a good time anymore.

Yeah this is what Resident Evil is all about. Capcom knew what they were doing when they called it SURVIVAL horror. There are very few horror games that are like this. For example, everyone categorizes Silent Hill as survival horror too but I disagree, Konami themselves referred to SH1 as 'horror adventure' when it first came out. Both RE and SH are anxiety inducing but they achieve it differently. Therefore I find it really dumb when some people claim that RE isn't a horror franchise

UNDERRAIL
It's fun, it's interesting, it's challenging, it's TOO challenging, and that's the point, you're supposed to feel how hard it actually is to not only survive, but grow stronger as you explore the post apocalypse world. This is compounded by the fact that the "real" experience is a leveling system that depends on you finding interesting items rather than leveling up from combat.

The game itself is not complex, but it's very elaborate, unlike a normie rpg you actually benefit from getting that helmet with +2 acid resistance, and if you try to even out your stats you will fuck yourself in the ass because there is no way to survive by being a little bit ok at everything, you need to minmax any skill you actually want to use.

Age of Empires 2. The first one wasn't too bad, a struggle at times, but the sequel just gets insane with needing to rush in every mission. I am not very good at rushing things and my enemies end up highly leveling over me. People talk about stuff like The Great Hunt in AoE1, but there I had plenty of time to strategize each part and save scum my way to victory. Usually in AoE1, the strategy was just to find some remote corner of the map where the enemy didn't find you until you were ready to overwhelm them with a completely maxed pop count.

dont get me wrong i dont think its that hard, but after 3 playthrough of MGS1,i still find myself dying or being in trouble more often than other games you mentioned, what helps in MGS is knowing all the trick and using all the weapons and items, for example metal gear rex is so fucking hard before you know to use chaff and later stun grenade,i also have to stay on my toe when fighting gray fox and sniper wolf if i dont use the medication,im sure there are other part but to make it short i have to be more alert and concentrate while playing mgs1 where as in RE i can be more laid back and silent hill its mostly the puzzles that are the roadblock on a first playthrough.

Digimon World 1, honestly.

The mechanics seem simple but there's so much esoteric information that isn't delivered to the player. Even following old guides from based forum days, I couldn't understand how the mechanics worked in practice. Let me give you an example
>fanmade evolution chart says X Digimon needs X, Y, and Z amounts of certain stats to digivolve a certain way
>Ok, simple enough, let's start training with the first stat
>halfway into training, Digimon evolved earlier than expected
>usually Numemon unless I'm lucky to get another Champion
>unknown if I've made any Care Mistakes

That's how I got all the chaos emeralds in Sonic 2 but I 'cheated' even more. I had an emulator open on PC and starting from bonus stage 4, before every bonus stage I stood up, went to my PC and practiced it on an emulator. Then I went back to my TV, grabbed the controller and did it on console. Did I do the right thing? Absolutely, fuck chaos emeralds in any Sonic game. Fuck whoever came up with the idea of chaos emeralds. Well, not the idea itself but the implementation, ESPECIALLY in Sonic 2

Silent Hill 1 doesn't have fixed camera angles though and it's also not nearly as difficult as RE. Even on Hard I'd say that Silent Hill is a much more pleasent experience if it didn't compensate for everything by being so scary that you have to actually stop playing and take a break from time to time

Your retelling reminds me of the nightmare it was to defeat Mundus on DMC1 Dante Must Die rank S first time. It was unbearable to have to go through of its first form over and over again without a turbo controller only to lose my nerves as I was trying to learn my way around its second form. I must have spent 4 nights trying to sucessfully defeat it, with the first form being defeated the first night and pretty much mastered by the time I finally got him. Such a painful and frustrating experience because I could never dedicate all my energy and focus to the actual hard part of the battle.

Silent Hill 1's difficulty (or any of the other entries of the series, for that matter) reallt shines through when you attempt a 10 star ranking. It demolishes any challenge any Resident Evil has to offer and it's a shame Capcom never made its ranking system with such complexity and prowness - you pretty much have to come up with your own arbitrary rules for it.

If you enjoy other classic RE games you really should revisit that game. Its quite long and it does the RE formula well, dated visuals and simplistic gameplay aside.

For Dino Crisis 1 I feel you. I didn't like how different it was to RE, I didnt like that there was no clear cut health bar, didnt like the full 3d gray and dull environments and found the atmosphere to be lacking. It felt like a RE without anything that makes RE good.

During development of RE2 in 1997, Capcom hired Noboru Sugimura to handle the screenwriting. He was a professional TV writer and wasn't happy with the limitations of video game design but wanted to change that. He founded Flagship as a writer's college, and made deals with Nintendo and Capcom to provide professional writers for games. Incidentally, this is why RE2 has so many subplots going on independently (police corruption, serial killers, corporate espionage, Sherry's story, etc.) - because he wrote it like the game was the season finale of a TV show.

When Capcom expanded its operations, they relied heavily on Flagship, with Sugimura becoming the unofficial creative director of the franchise. As a result, games like CODE:Veronica, Resident Evil 0 and the prototype Resident Evil 4 games draw heavily from the tokusatsu TV genre, with Sugimura often re-using elements from Super Sentai episodes he wrote for the games. They introduced ideas like ancient superhumans and superpowers, and some very goofy villain ideas you'd expect in tokusatsu, but at the same time talk extensively about corporate intrigue, eugenics and Fascism.

Sugimura left Capcom in 2004, and died in February the next year, but because he did a lot to shift Capcom's operations they still rely on his story notes for modern RE games.

TL;DR - CV is part of RE's early development as it was trying to advance itself as a legitimate narrative-driven series (for Japan at least), but outside of Japan it comes across as weird - like tokusatsu itself.
