It is "rare" because it was a failure

It has a few gems but nothing like the classics the N64 and PS1 had.

Play SEGA CD and 32X first, then play Saturn. If you like Genesis then you will probably enjoy SEGA CD and 32X. They were really supposed to be the successor to the Genesis before the Saturn came along.

As for Saturn itself, you're going to end up either loving it or being disappointed just like a lot of people who bought one in the 90's only to get a PS1 or N64 months later. It's not a bad console, but I personally would not put it beside PS1 or Dreamcast.

Games that appeal to me. The system is one of my top 5 game consoles of all time. At the time, the games were really cheap in clearance bins, so it was great when I had little money.

>> No.9899687

I don't think you should be allowed to rate retro consoles unless you know Japanese or are willing to play games you don't understand.

Rating consoles based off of only their Western output only is like rating the entirety of a 130 minute movie after watching 30 minutes of it.

As much as I hate to admit it, this is fairly true. I would say that Saturn and N64 are about on par when it comes to games. They are just vastly different libraries. PS1 def takes the cake when it comes to most good to great titles.

Back then, every Saturn owner knew they had to get games from Japan. They even had import sections in retail game stores like Electronics Boutique. Even now, the video games I play aren't the popular titles. Some games may not vibe with others, but that's the point to OP: the appeal of home game consoles are the games that you enjoy.

>>9899789
Yeah, a lot of fun times. It ended out as a surprise that I have a lot of Saturn games, 2nd only to the 360 only because of all the free digital titles, but I legitimately had a lot of fun discovering and playing a lot of cool games just because people passed on them in their day.

>>9899853
As mentioned, they were cheap in their day. I randomly found Super Tempo for $35USD (around $40USD after taxes) when it was new and I had no idea about the game, it was so-so for play but very interesting nonetheless; it was hilarious to show off at our bi-weekly meetings we had at a friend's place. That was part of the joy, they had an N64 there when I didn't have it and we had so much fun playing Wrestlemania 2000. Showing off what interesting new finds to playing alongside/against friends was great with the variety to see and experience. N64 had a lot of memorable games too.

Had an exclusive good game or two in just about every genre. Tons of fighting and shmups. But it didnt have some of the key ones at the time to sell systems. Plenty of decent obscure stuff. It lacked the heavy hitters of the N64 and playstation but had some niches that only it could fill. Really the n64 was the same way but its niche was the large open 3d games like Banjo, Zelda and Mario that people love or love to hate.

Beatemups
>2d: Guardian Heroes, Dungeons and Dragons
>3d: Die Hard Arcade
>Fighting: Too many to count 2d,3d,Arena, everything
>FPS: Powerslave, Gungriffons, Stellar Assault (Translation out today!)
>2d Platformers: Nothing special (Astal?)
>Hacknslash: Pychic Killer Torumaru
> Run n gun: Elevator Action Returns
>3d platformers: Nothing Special (Ninpen?)
>Shmups: Best system for these of all time hands down, tons of stuff
> Light gun: Virtua Cops
>Rail Shooters: Panzer Dragoons, Space Harrier, Night Striker
>3rd person shooter: Bulk Slash, burning rangers
>Racing: Sega Rally
>Score Attack: Steep Slope Sliders, Nights
>RPGs: Dragonforce, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Baroque
Survival Horror: Deep Fear
Puzzle: Baku Baku, Columns, Bomberman

There’s plenty there, its just all weird and obscure and Sega doesn’t make marketing sense. Trying to market an odd game like Nights as the systems flagship game is just terrible marketing regardless of its quality.

Probably the closest would be Sega Touring Car Championship. Pure simulation racers like GT didn't really make their way to Saturn. But it does have a good selection of arcade style racers.
>MGS
>THPS
Saturn was dead by the time these came out so it seems kind of silly to expect it to have a response to what's effectively genre defining games.

>Mario 64
NiGHTS, Burning Rangers, Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Jam, Croc, Tomb Raider, Ninpen Manmaru, etc.

Virtual Hydlide (lol).

On a more serious note it again seems silly to expect Saturn to have a response to a game that came out after it was discontinued and was effectively genre defining.
>Goldeneye
Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Powerslave, etc.

>> No.9903524

We get this fucking thread thread every week, but I'll answer it anyways because I'm retarded. The Saturn is Segas predecessor to the Dreamcasts experimental and weird games, especially in terms of peripherals and online capabilities. But obviously that stuff only really mattered when that stuff was getting released and not now. So what the hell does the Saturn offer as a platform now? A major fuck ton of exclusives that were never ported and arcade games that were better on Saturn, and never were ported using the Saturn version. Owning a Saturn and Dreamcast nowadays is truly the best way to experience arcade games at home unless you're dealing with mister mame bullshit. Also the Saturn has the 4mb ram cart and that thing was pretty dope fr fr
