I love playing the original versions.
At first, after being accustomed to better graphics, the early DQ games look really barebone, but once I'm playing and getting into it, I start seeing it with different eyes. Suddenly all that flat 2D world with repetitive graphics become a full, mysterious world to explore. It's like I start opening my child eyes again, and I can see the games the way I saw them before. I don't think it's nostalgia goggles, it's actually taking off the "modern goggles", so to speak. It's awesome and I love when that happens.

You are now aware that there are scores of senior citizen/retirement homes across the globe, all filled to the brim with aging, crusty people who refuse to die. In each one of these retirement Utopias, the given rate of toothless person-to-mouth full of dentures and Poligrip is probably 1:10.

I usually don't buy all the weapons or armor in the game. My usual pattern is to start with the Bamboo Stick and Clothes and skip completely over the Small Shield and go straight for Large when I get the money. Weapons I usually go Copper Sword, Broad Sword, then Erdrick's/Loto's Sword and armors I go Chain Mail, Full Plate, then Erdrick's/Loto's again and get the Silver Shield at the end. You don't have to grind much for money this way.

If it's the glitch where the text fucks up when the Prince of Cannok get's cursed, you don't need to unpatch the game. The glitch is caused if his name is too long. The two back up characters get randomly assigned names, one of the names for the prince, "Rolando" triggers the glitch (there might be other names, that's the one I had when I got it). All you need to do to avoid the glitch is change his name to something shorter. There's a secret way in the game to change the name from the save loading screen. >Is this system balanced?
Not really. Some of them are a lot better than others.
>Will I be okay if I just randomized my party's personality?
Yeah, it's not a huge deal, since you can change their personalities with books or some equipped items.

>> No.997935

>>997795
The personalities affect stat growth, but even with bad match-up, you shouldn't have any problems that can't be fixed with a little extra grinding. You can change people's personality temporarily with some accessories, or permanently with books. In general if the personality sounds more physical, it's probably good for melee characters, if it's more mental, it's probably good for magic users.

If you do want to go all min-maxer, there's guides that explain the system in detail. Hero's personality is determined by the test at the beginning, other characters that you create are partially random, but partially determined by how you distribute the seeds you're given when you create them.

Anyway, I was hoping one of you fine chaps could answer a question for me that I have been confused about for years. Besides the four games on the NES, what are the other american-produced games? The confusion comes in because of Japanese translations- which I I have never been interested in. I mean, maybe I should be, unless the translations are stupid- then, no. _DONT_ throw away the NohMask. do not equip it unless you really need to defeat something nasty.

it is nearly impossible to get any divinegon wishes in a solo run. i racked up 117 turns, and he said that was too much time.

Maybe it's been way to long since I've played a real old school JRPG (not counting DQ1 since that was bare minimum and didn't really have a big way to get lost). Hell I only found the Water Seal from just opening a random jail cell for no reason but to open it.

I experienced that too, after I got the boat I didn't really know where to go. I even got my first seal before I talked to the npc who told me to collect them. But in my case I got it easy, because I skimmed through the walkthrough when I got the glitch. Now that I play DQ III I found something that maybe can be a help to you. In DQ III there's an item that help you to find seal-like items like in DQ II. If you use that, it will notify you if you're near the seal-like items. I don't know if it could be considered spoiler, but just in case it is, that item is Echo Flute. I remember I got that item back then in DQ II but didn't use that since I still somewhat remember the location when I read the guide.

It definitely doesn't use DQ9's engine. Having played both 3DS games, my educated guess would be that the DQ7 remake runs on a modified DQMT3D engine. There are no random encounters at all in both, you can always see the monsters walking around the maps and dungeons. The battle system is as it was in the original, this isn't a Level 5 game.

I'm actually playing the 16-bit port of Dragon Quest 1 right now. I remember getting Dragon Warrior from that Nintendo Power subscription promotion way back when... my first real jRPG. I was fucking HOOKED. But the game was a bit brutal near the end... I never got around to storming Castle Charlock. Fast-foward a few years, and I beat the game on the GBC version. Felt good.

Now I'm playing the fan-translated Super Fami version on an emulator. Feels better, the score sounds amazing. They really made the game newb-friendly, didn't they? Far less grinding than I remember (a good thing, I guess) but they went and removed my favorite grinding spot south of the castle (that little strip of mountain where I can fight Scorpions and Magidrakees). Oh well.

I want to start DQII next.

I started playing a fan translation patched version of 1+2 for SNES but realized literally every facet of the game was nerfed from the NES version. Everything is cheaper, practically zero grinding, and there's even a fucking bank to store items. It was such a joke of a game I went back to the NES ones.

The hero has a little healing, but a cleric makes it a ton easier.
A soldier makes a great meat shield along with your hero. Fighters are a lot faster but they don't have as much armor.
Mages are very powerful and useful, but they're the squishiest and have to rely on their mana.
Thieves and dealers have some utility, but I'm not really impressed with them.

I recommend the hero and a cleric for sure, then some combination of soldier/fighter/mage.

Sages get both the mage and the cleric magic. Jesters can change to them after level 20, or you can use an item to change anyone to a sage. It's not a bad idea to turn your mage into a sage so you get an extra healer. The game explains it all once you get to the place that lets you change classes.

You'll want a thief at some point for hunting tinymedals, which can be traded for prizes. You can start out with one and change as soon as you get to the temple, since they get all their skills before level 20.

Jesters can be turned into sages, but I think they can make good fighters. I heard Fighters crit more when they have high luck, and jesters can often max out their luck before hitting level 20.

So maybe...Hero, thief, cleric, jester.

thief -> jester -> fighter
cleric -> sage
jester -> sage

Just be prepared to hate running into the crab enemies until you get to the job change temple.

Maybe he's better in the GBC version because I thought he was awesome. While not that strong he was able to dish out nice damage with the falcon sword. Plus he had an all target spell that did about 60-70 damage. His defense was the worst however and even with seeds the princess was always ahead of him in MP.

So, what do you usually name your hero in Dragon Quest games?

>> No.1026630

Currently playing DQ III, after defeating Baramos, I realized that this series don't have much love for magic user, do they? All they do when facing bosses were just healing and buff/debuffing. I've played I-VI, and IX and as I recalled, the most damage I've ever dished to enemy was by buffing your main attacker (usually warrior) and debuffing the enemy. I haven't met any magic that can catch up to that.

Still, it's a team effort. Your attacker guys do more damage, but you can't win with a party entirely of them. Magic guys are still needed for their healing and utility spells.

As long as you have somewhat appropriate personalities (attacker guys have strong sounding personalities and caster guys have smart sounding personalities) you'll be alright.

Have solo challenges been done with say DQ3 or 4 or 9? Something like solo soldier or sage or something. I think he's talking about a legit run. And I guess you can with a solider and 2 pilgrims. Since you will have the healing and they have pretty good defense. And since they have Sap they can make it so you can actually damage high defense enemies. It will be hard I'm sure but I'm guessing it could be done.

So I just made it to this part on the Japanese SNES version of DQ3. Apparently it's actually not a fault with the translation after all and instead just Mister Ed the Talking Horse being a bit of a dick, since the word used here, 浅瀬, literally means "shoal" or "sand bar".
At least now I've learned never to trust anything that a horse has to say about the sea.

Any tips on where to find the yellow orb in GBC DQ3? Someone told me something about it traveling from person to person around the world, and I think someone else said something about checking the town that my dealer built (which has now been named after my dealer, and where people are getting upset about his behavior), but I looked around the town and didn't see anything...

Go there at night. There will be some people hanging outside the jail saying not very nice things about your dealer. Then when you come back your dealer will be in jail, and somebody should give you the hint of where to find it.

I personally liked IV. But if you a type of guy that really hates accents in gaming then look at the NES version. While it does use a Elizabethan English it's more readable then some of the NPCs in the DS version. They toned down the accents in V for the DS. There's still some NPC accents but nearly as much. I've heard the PS2 version of V and heard there's a fan translation of it so if you can play PS2 emulators go for that.

Thanks for the responses, I tried changing him to sage yesterday, but since he must went through jester first (I used my zen book on my mage), his mp starts kinda low at level 1. If you feel like holding it off for a little bit to switch straight to Sage, I'm pretty sure you can find another zen book in the game. Otherwise yeah, I'd say go with Thief and try to get the shoes from metal babbles since that's a handy item if you already run around a lot.
