What are some games you guys enjoy on the master system? I've been playing through Wonder boy II and it's been really good.

Also what console version is best to collect and enjoy? The Master system II or the Japanese versions?

If you don't mind not having a card reader, I guess the Master System II is alright. But I think the Master System 1 models would be the best to collect for. Or alternatively, you could use a genesis/ MD with a Power Base Converter, or even use a modded GameGear with a TV out and some after market Master Gear converter or a everdrive that can support SMS ROM's.

Ah I see. Is there any benefit to the Japanese Master system then? The Mk-2000 has the Fm audio, and 3d glasses, but is it worth the mark up? or can I get fm audio through the u.s models easily?

>What are some games you guys enjoy on the master system?
Phantasy Star, Dragon's Trap, Ninja Gaiden, Power Strike I and II, The Ninja - Good games that I have nothing interesting to say about.
Golvellius - I didn't like this at first, but once you beat the second boss it gets a lot more interesting. Enemies just never stop being relentless though.
Black Belt - A bit primitive, and some people dismiss it as a clone of Kung Fu. But it's really a step up from that, especially the boss fights and the music.
Kenseiden - This is a frustrating game at first, but with practice, it opens up. Has a creepy medieval Japan vibe.

>> No.9886236

>>9885149
The Japanese Master System already has the FM audio module inside the shell, no add-on needed. It's great for that reason alone.

I was one of the weird American kids that grew up with a Master System instead of an NES. My favorite games were Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy in Monster World, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Pro Wrestling, Shooting Gallery, and Ghostbusters. Shooting Gallery in particular I think is a very underrated light gun game. It's a cool system with a few great games, but I always wished I had an NES instead and didn't get one until the early 90's when they could be bought for dirt cheap.

>>9885149
Tim Worthington has a pretty easy to install mod for the SMS to restore FM audio capabilities, but honestly I think you're better off using a Sega Genesis with the PowerBase Mini or a Mega Everdrive Pro.

Never really got into the Master System (or Game Gear). fwiw, never really got into the NES either, so no NES/SMS bias here.

Did enjoy Rampage and Astro Warrior.

Awesome games. Loved Shinobi and Wonderboy, solid ports of Prince of persia, lemmings, new zealand story. Mickey mouse kicked ass. Sonic 2 was cool. Fantasy zone was my favorite. Never got interested in Phantasy Star. Was saving up for a nes and bought this instead because a big fat lady bought the last 2 nes in the shop I remember her big fat tracksuit ass jiggling out of the shops. So I became a Sega chad

Excellent system when the developers knew what they were doing and didn't simply try to slap up downgraded versions of 16-bit games. Sadly that's basically an accurate description of 90% of the MS catalog after 1990

I really want to transplant a game gear vdp into the master system to get stereo sound out of the original console. But I'm not really enough into the master system so it would be an autistic waste of time. Maybe when I'm old as fuck

In hindsight this was just one of the many blunders Sega did when developing hardware. The purpose was to give the Mega Drive a massive library of games, but all it did in the end was add additional costs to the hardware throughout its lifespan. It was as retarded as kneecapping the CPU clock speed from 12Mhz to 7MHz for peripheral support. This never happened as the only peripheral that used same connector route was the Mega CD which had its own CPU.

It's a fun machine, kenseiden is awesome. Don't like the controller. The phaser games are fun. It sucks ass via rf. It's actually the the sega system, the master system had all the extras. Thinking of selling off my sega genesis/CD stuff and just keeping the master system and saturn and dreamcast.

I had a Master System before I got an NES. Always thought the NES D-pad was less comfortable, with those sharp edges, and difficulty going diagonally. I seem to be the only one who thinks this, though.
