I bought a ''splitter'' (device on the left) to connect my different machines to the tv but the device does not come with cables to connect it to the tv, so, in order to succesfully pair the device and the TV so i can connect my consoles to the other way of the splitter, i should buy an AV cable like the one in the picture for the sound and then a S video cable like the one from the picture and then connect both to the tv and the box so both signals can be transfered to the consoles in the other side of the splitter, right? I'm kinda retarded by the way so any help is greatly appreciated

should be what you need if you want s-video + stereo audio. Either your first pic and don't use the yellow or the second one is fine. I wouldn't expect the box to convert between s-video and composite.
I just picked up a radioshack branded s-vid (like your second pic) from goodwill for $1.50 but I plan on cutting it and soldering to a nintendo AV connector

thanks, i may have to go for the method on the first picture because i can only find a cable like the one here>>9872385 at 75ft of lenght and that's way too much, so it's nice to know that one works too

Don't be an idiot anon. buy any pre-HDMI home theater receiver and you get video / audio switching, preamp and speaker amp functionality, with serious build quality for the same amount of money.

i don't have all my consoles plugged into power but i do have all the AV cables plugged into a switcher. im not going to set everything up from scratch when i play something new and you're just going to have to live with that

That clearly says it's a switcher. Just to define these devices, a switcher connects multiple inputs to one output, and a splitter connects one input to multiple outputs. They don't work both ways unless it's device that specifically handles multiple inputs and outputs such as an a/v matrix. Always do enough research that you understand what you're buying and if it can perform what you need before you actually purchase it.

you're right about the difference in terms but a passive switcher can route one input to two different outputs, just not at the same time. It's useful for audio if you want to choose between a stereo or the built in TV speakers. Or two different TVs. You just connect it backwards and it won't make any difference, it's just a mechanical switch.
With any of this stuff, watch out for ground loops if two devices have a three prong plug. I know someone that was running two PCs through an audio switcher into a single pair of computer speakers and he was getting audible ground loop interference noise because the switcher wasn't cutting the ground, only the signals. An audio isolation transformer easily fixed the issue.

I hope it's not one of those switchers that tries to combine the S-Video and Composite video signals on the output, the output always ends up looking like garbage on those.

I think that is a switch which is mechanical. It functions like plugging and unplugging cables manually. So I would expect the input to match the output, meaning S-video in will need a S-video out. If you are looking for a splitter, to have one device output to multiple displays/captures, those tend to be powered and is a different device. Some switches can output to more than one receiver, but I think the one you have pictured may just be a simple mechanical switch and not a splitter.
