What’s the difference between the action adventure and platformer genres? Jumping?

Going back to the 2D era, platformers were usually either single screen (like Donkey Kong) or linear (like Super Mario Bros). Action adventure have always been non linear and usually top down (like Zelda), often with more story elements. With games like Metroid platformers became less linear, but still usually side scrolling.

It wasn't until the 3D era when lines started to become blurred between action adventure and platform games, and even then action adventure games are usually known to be less linear and more combat- and exploration-focused.

In the PS2 era? Almost nothing. There were some real, traditional platformers here and there, but the genre was pretty much dead up until the Wii.

II wouldn't say it was dead. GameCube had Mario, PS2 had Jak and Sly (and Ratchet, even though it's more of a TPS), Xbox had Blinx and Conker. Beyond that there were plenty of games like Tak, Ty, Vexx, Scaler, and others.

Maybe calling them dead was a hyperbole but you have to admit platformers were losing their identity in general. Jak stopped being a pure platformer with 2 and Ratched was always more of a kiddy TPS. I would say Sly still felt like a platformer and the stealth mechanics were more like a gimmick, but I don't remember those games very well so dunno.

That doesn't mean you didn't still have some games that were mostly just about jumping and/or colleting things, Twin Sanity was pretty traditional, but on the top of my mind most platformers from that era were really on the action adventure side.

action: Any game that is not turn based where you control an avatar (not an army). Or the previous but reflexes matter a lot. All platformers are action games. It's a super type.

platformer: Involves lots of jumping and obstacles

action platformer: A platformer that emphasizes melee fighting and less platforming.

run n gun platformer: A platformer that emphasizes ranged fighting and less jumping

adventure: a game that involves the use of item/dialogue for puzzles and advancement and at least some degree of exploration.

There's a stronger focus on combat and exploration/Adventuring rather than platforming. There may be a few platforming challenges, but they'll be few and not very elaborate compared to purely platformer games.

Platformers are based around stages, adventure is a consistent world.
