Yeah the whole WASD+mouse setup wasn't exactly standardized before the 2000's. If you look back at the keybind layouts and joystick solutions being used during the 80s and 90s you'd be scratching your head wondering how the hell they even came up with such backwards ass controls, but that's how things were back then.

I never got using flight sticks being used for anything besides flight sims or other shit where you pilot an air vehicle (Terminal Velocity, Fury cubed, Descent). I can only see it as some weird last resort where you had literally nothing else and really didn't want to use the keyboard. Seemed like even using just the keyboard was better for that shit.
