What (lesser known) fighting games would /vr/ recommend to a novice as of 2023? I'm looking for stuff that's accessible but not just about button mashing; I'm willing to put in some general effort to git ̶g̶u̶d̶ acceptable.

Also as a secondary criterion: good artwork, cool characters etc.

(If you can spare the time, I'd rather see one well argued rec than just a list of titles, thanks)

I don't know how "lesser known" your looking for but check out what people are playing on fightcade

Yeah, I find fighting games pointless if you're not playing them against someone at least, especially since they're generally low content and some of them have brutal as hell single players. But playing against someone is how you're supposed to build your real skills in the end
But don't listen to me, maybe. I don't play fighting games

I find Guilty Gear (particularly XX#R) to be fun even as a beginner.
Now if you want something more obscure with good art and cool characters, you could try Waku Waku 7.

>Breakers Revenge
>Matrimelee
>Rage of the Dragons
All three are easy to pick up, and there's enough info on the characters (with some exceptions).

>Advanced V.G. 2
The PS1-exclusive sequel to the first A.V.G. game, which is a vast improvement over that one. Still it's more-or-less a SF2 clone, but a very competent one. Some characters can perform infinite combos if you're good enough. The all-female cast was designed by the late Takahiro Kimura, who also worked on Code Geass or Dirty Pair Flash. I've never played a fighting game before stumbling on this one.

>Evil Zone aka Eretzvaju
Another PS1-exclusive game. This is a 3D fighter that uses only two action buttons - one for defense and another for offense, the latter can be combined with D-pad buttons for additional attacks and that's all. No combos or complicated button inputs for special attacks. It's quite a complex game for its simplicity. And the cast? Bunch of Japanese pop-culture fighting each other: a Super Sentai dude, sci-fi Guts knock-off, scantily-clad warrior babe, an over 9000 year-old loli priestess - you name it. And you'd better play the Japanese version because the English voice acting is horrendous.

>Still it's more-or-less a SF2 clone
From what I've read, it plays more like an Alpha/RealBout game (chains/target combos, guard cancels, multiple supers). Looks cool, I'll give it a try when Duckstation gets added to Fightcade (only the SNES port of the previous game is available).

There’s always someone more hipster than you on /vr/ who would bitch that Waku Waku 7 isn’t obscure, but it’s a lot of fun and really accessible. Same thing with Project Justice on Dreamcast/Arcade.

did you play the early marvel games?

xmen cota
marvel super heroes
xmen vs sf

>>9866295
rage of the dragons and breakers are good suggestions

Capcom vs SNK 2 is another one

alpha 3 and 3rd strike are different enough if you dont like the above

if fightcade games dont work out of you, see you on +R or not retro SF4
