They're alright. I like Gunstar Heroes and their McDonald's game. Guardian Heroes is okay. They're not my favorite when it comes to shmups though. Think 16-bit is when they truly shined.

Decades ago I remember when Radiant Silvergun was seen as the the 2nd coming of genius and you'd be called an idiot and hated if you spoke against it. It was the pinnacle of gaming and worshiped by every fat neckbeard and hipster than didn't play the game.

Glad times have changed and there's still that one sperganon that spams the threads, an no one else.

Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier specifically are trash. Gunstar Heroes deathless on expert is one of the worst designed modes I've ever played. Alien Soldier's controls are embarrassingly bad and it's baffling they never took advantage of the six button scheme.

Ikaruga is just normiebait and most actual shmup players dislike it, but I haven't played it enough to have an opinion beyond negative.

All Treasure fans I've seen just have a strong first impression from production values then promptly drop the game.

Because Sega didn't ship with the six button controller. So the majority would have had the three button controller instead. You should blame Sega more here for not having the foresight to release six button controller from the get go.

I'm glad you mentioned Radiant Silvergun, when people told me Saturn is good for shmups I thought I would be blown away by it, but it just didn't really do anything for me. It's not even the best shooter on Saturn, not when games like Hyper Duel and Sengoku Blade exist.

That and the sole Treasure employee who planned the game deemed that six-button controllers were for wimps. He wanted the game HIS way, to the point where the boss of Treasure had to sneak adjustments behind his back because everybody said it was too hard.

Imagine Marina in her very own shmup, exclusive for Saturn. They could've developed it alongside the N64 game and borrowed a few elements from it like the prerendered art style. It could be like Saturn's own exclusive cute 'em up just like Keio 1 on SEGA CD

Radient Silvergun didnt do much to me too. Cotton 2 on the other hand sucked me in.
