what was with those SD games being made all the time in 4th-5th gen? so many series got this treatment, sometimes it made no sense (Splatterhouse, Snatcher).

This one is just weird. Also, the toy characters remind me of Team America

I can only assume that SD Gundam started this trend.
>The popularity of SD Gundam was such that between the late '80s and early '90s, sales from the SD Gundam franchise far exceeded the rest of Gundam.
seems to be exactly the timeframe for these SD games. Super Robot Taisen also started back then.
Plus, it's profitable for a publisher to just make an SD spinoff of the same thing. And on platforms like GB, SD allowed to cram sprites at small resolution.

while not officially dubbed "SD", KoF games on Neo Geo Pocket were all like this. though like I said, going SD made sense for a handheld with low resolution.

Japan really enjoyed cute simplistic designs. Just take a look at Famicom platformers, and compare to western ones. They usually look really simple, with background objects made of a single colour

It makes sense from a marketing perspective. Kids could now play the well known series too, and when they grow up they can play the adult violent stuff.

Kid Dracula plays a bit more like Mega Man. VF Kids isn't very different from VF2, but at least the character models look a bit nicer. Not retro but Mega Man also got this treatment with Powered Up on PSP.

They remind me a bit of Nendoroids which I like, and yeah they are probably more marketable towards kids and girls. Sometimes they also tended to have simpler stories iirc. It's a bit like DragonBall vs. DBZ

I like them, I feel like someone who plays games like Animal Crossing or MapleStory is more likely to get into them than the main series just for the character design alone. Nendoroids and Sanrio stuff proves chibi sells. I have a friend who collects this kind of stuff all the time

SD Gundam was so much bigger than most can imagine. It didn't just outsell every previous Gundam series, it also spawned a whole boatload of original mecha IPs featuring SD designs.
