I personally don't like the non-/vr/ ones very much because the tone is completely different. Much more modern "chuuni" style isekai anime-feeling stuff for teenagers that isn't my cup of tea at all.

>> No.9867914

>>9867908
I don't really understand what you mean since Ys hasn't really done any Isekai plot, everything still takes place within it's world, the usual backlash I hear is over the party gameplay being completely different from the Car Bumper gameplay. I don't know if my idea of chuuni is different, but stuff like Lacrimosa of Dana and the retelling of Mask of the Sun even feel dated on release, like an early 00's fantasy anime to me, just with a newer coat of paint. To me, a chuuni anime for teenagers are Konosuba or Danmachi where they even blatantly use videogame mechanics and terms in-universe.

Yeah, sorry anon, it's not quite there to me. I do wonder if we'll have a bumper game any time though, there was a Falcom anime 2 or 3 years ago that even mentioned it with Adol bumping into stuff.

>> No.9867949

I started reading the Slayers books with the new hardcover collections. They're actually pretty damn good, better than the anime in my opinion.
If you read the old translations I'd say it's worth picking up the new ones. No censorship this time so stuff like getting raped by a fish are included in their entirety.
One thing that does kinda annoy me about Slayers is that every adaptation has its own continuity that differs greatly from the others. When characters meet, the general order of events and even characterizations are entirely different between each version.
Do the video games take place in the anime continuity or are they once again their own separate thing?

The SNES game is the only one that is canon to something, being set after the eighth novel. The rest are based on the anime but not paricularily canon to anything.

I think the legacy of Slayers as a gateway series for uncensored anime is interesting, there was a series called Magic Magiswords on Cartoon Network a few years back. Mighty Magiswords was basically just Slayers through a coked-up western cartoon lens.
The show's creator is famous for throwing multiple pitches at a wall to see what sticks and Mighty Magiswords was the one that actually got picked up by Cartoon Network. He still does pitches today, like one about a hambuger man and orange girlfriend and one about a guy and gal pizza delivery team who are wild pigs.

>> No.9870329

I didn't knew about pitching multiple shows, but the former is very obvious. Still, it felt more from a place of admiration rather than plagiarism, especially the original mini series.

The guy is definitely the kind of person that loves his inspirations so I'm guessing he treats Magiswords like a semi love letter to Slayers in its own weird way. People on /co/ make fun of him because he has the "soiboi" look.

I've never seen the dude so I wouldn't know. Thanks for the insight on his career, it's very interesting. I wish Magiswords had succeeded more but it doesn't work on the 30 minute mark like it did as a miniseries, it would've needed a revamp. Maybe something akin to Dave the Barbarian.
