Can any anons help me achieve this exact look on retro arch? This is the filter I use with my mister with handhelds and I absolutely love the look, I cannot find anything that comes close to this look using retroarch, they get the grid too small or too dark, I just want this exact filter when I use my steam deck and play gba games.

I just want the grid look, that's all.

It scales the image to the next integer above your display's maximum resolution. So at 1080p regular integer scaling only allows scaling to a maximum of 4x scale (so 960p for 240p games or 896p for 224p games), whereas overscaling allows you to go one step further to 5x scale, which does cut off a bit off the top and bottom, but those areas are well within the area of the screen that would've been expected to be covered up on a real CRT due to overscan, so it's unlikely to cut off anything important. So you lose nothing of importance, you fill up your monitor's vertical area instead of having letterboxing, and you give CRT shaders a bit more resolution to work their magic. You won't want to use it on arcade or handheld games, though.

LUT Colors: 4.0 (NTSC; this is optional, I just like how it looks)
Bloom Strength: 0.85 or thereabouts (play with this until you get it how you like it)
Scanline type: -1
Scanline Shape Bright Pixels: 0.90
Scanline Saturation: 0
Scanline Falloff: 2.0

Mask Strength: 1.0
Mask Low Strength: 2.0
Slot Mask Strength Bright: 1.0
Slot Mask Strength Dark: 0.50

I use console border shader for handhelds and looks fine.

>> No.9861528

>>9861429
Border shaders typically don't use overscale, but rather scale the image to an integer such as 3x or 4x and then fill in the black areas with a border without cutting off any of the actual display area. What I mean is that handheld games were not made with overscan in mind and so they typically make use of the entirety of the display area for visual information, so overscaling risks cutting out things like scores, health bars, etc. Same with arcade games.

I mean what I try to say is that when you use border shaders the overscale only crops part of the border but since the game is in the middle on a smaller square is not affected.

I tried gb, gbc and gba and I didn't see any crop in the gameplay itself maybe in the border.

It should be in the "handheld" folder of the "shaders_slang" folder (I think all the folders are the same but I don't know. I think retroarch video drivers change which one works at a time).

There's a LOT of shaders in that folder btw. If this isn't what you want, just search through there one by one. If that's a handheld filter in your original post you'll find it.

I don't think it was ever about intention. Recall that the precursors to those filters (eagle, 2xSaI, Scale2x, etc.) were all developed in the 90's, and were intended as scaling algorithms for the monitors of their day. That's why they're more properly known as scalers rather than filters.

https://forums.libretro.com/t/new-crt-shader-from-guest-crt-guest-advanced-updates/25444/3464
Guest often updates his shit here first, and it later makes it into the main libretro shader repo, so there's a chance he changed something like a variable that's making it fail to load if you're using the shaders from libretro rather than Guest's latest. Might be worth a shot. If that doesn't work, just refer to my post here >>9861184, as most of the settings are the same, with the exception that I have regular bloom set to 0.5 and mask bloom also set to 0.5, as well as some additional convergence tweaks down at the bottom.

My man, it's time you learned about a thing called DPI or PPI and more importantly, viewing distance.

27" 4k is literally PERFECT when it comes to scaling, 'cause you can either do 200% scaling for 1080p 27" which is fine, good, a-ok, perfect at the right distance AND on top of that, my nigga, let me tell you about integer scaling it's the same shit, but you get to be pixel perfectu instead of softu

27" 4k is pretty much the best monitor resolution you can get. 27" 4k 240hz and probably a better monitor technology is pretty much perfect. Allows for ULMB, integer scaling of 720p & 1080p etc, not too big, not too small, perfect for a desktop too.

idk, it just seems like you've never dealt with effective resolution or viewing distances.

Why change the subject from resolution to scaling? You talk about scaling and other features from 4K unrelated to their resolution size, the comparison was just about the resolution and the games played at their native screen resolution. Both 4K and 1080 unscaled for games at native resolutions in small screens are nearly the same and unnoticeable from regular distances.

am I using the wrong color palette or something? these color cell boundaries or whatever you call them, are really noticeable on my mobile screen, more so than in this screen shot. Other than the pixel shader (which looks great in person) I haven't done anything to change the appearance or color, and every other game looks perfect.
I'm not sure if there's something I should adjust, or this is just expected behavior since it's unusually detailed art developed for shitty dark GBC screens, and maybe this effect would be noticeable on an GBA SP screen too for example. but it is bugging me a teensy bit.

One of the reasons I don't use curvature, other than the fact that it usually doesn't do anything to improve the picture quality, is the fact that it often ends up introducing moire artifacts across the screen. There may be ways to mitigate it by now in the latest shaders, but still, why even? At best it's purely aesthetic. It's not like how scanlines and phosphor masks help present low-res content or NTSC blending of dithering and such.

You mean nearest neighbor scaling, right? Raw pixels would mean playing at the native resolution without aspect ratio correction. Anyway, if what you want is the blocky pixel look, sharp bilinear is straight-up a superior option, as it means you're free to correct the aspect ratio and not worry about integer scaling and still get a sharp picture free of scaling errors.

I'm feeling kinda similar. I understand that the point of CRT shaders is to get close at how games looked back in the day. But I always have the feeling that is not like the real deal and since I'm emulating, what the heck let's go full sharp.

By the way, I never had a snes but I remember emulating that and nes when I was a child. I played with a crt pc monitor and the games looked ultra sharp and without scanlines(or at least I can't remember them) so I guess I'm not so nostalgic for the "authentic" look.

>what the heck let's go full sharp.
Shaderfags don't care about sharpness they only care about CRT pretending. They prefer greying out all the pixels in their games with shader scan lines that look like a net covering a picture instead of a real CRT, only to try to imitate their long forgotten CRTs that they had at their childhood. They say this is all about the developers intention, but developers made and tested their games in modern CRT with very sharp screens that didn't have greyed out pixels or any visible scan lines, unless when being very very close to the screen. These modern CRTs are impossible to imitate even through the best shaders. Neither of these shaderfags that use CRT shaders actually remember these CRTs to know how different from the real thing their shaders are. So they just cope with these greyed out 4K CRT shaders and ignore how CRT's really were before. And the pic I'm posting here taken from a real CRT still wouldn't be close to the real thing and wouldn't have all those scanlines noticeable once you were actually experiencing it.

I'm no CRT schizo or shader schizo. Even though I own a CRT, I play at my LCD as well, but without CRT shaders, because I can compare enough to tell that these shaders have to degrade the quality of the original to add their superficial "CRT look" made of lines that wash out the color, blurring out the sharpness of the pixels. These are the things that only happened at the worst CRT models, because the best models were actually closer to a LCD screen and far different from these shaders. Some shaders are better than others, but only when they retain the sharpness of the pixel to look almost as you were playing without the shader, because this is how LCD screens are intended to display. The "magic" of the real CRTs is how they retain sharpness without the pixel look, this can only be achieved in a screen designed with their own pixel geometry, trying to add fake CRT pixels in a LCD screen through shaders does not change the pixel geometry of the LCD. This would be retarded as using a LCD shader on a CRT screen
