It was a minor element towards the end of the games, usually a lost civilization. It didn't fill the entire society.
Fantasy isn't fantastical when it's "present day-ish teenagers". This same trend towards infantilization happened in western cartoons and you can see why it's younger generations to grow up as perma-children.
