i just like the sharpness of raw pixels more.

More clarity = less annoying things getting in the way of skill. I couldnt imagine things like Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania on blurry shitty RF signals. I was born in 1994 and I dont have nostalgia for this shit.

CRTs diffuse the light emitted from its electron-strucken phosphor, squinting puts pressure on the eyeball allowing for clearer vision, opposite to the desired effect. If you push past that so your eyelids and lashes begin diffusing light however you're functionally filtering far more visual information for a comparatively substandard result. If you want to play your games like hans moleman you're free to do so

>Ishii: For example, in FFI the reason the mountains were white was because I envisioned that the rocks making up the mountains had crystal shards in them, and those shards sparkled from the reflection of the sun’s rays. That’s why the mountain’s surface was portrayed as white.

>Games at that time were played on cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs, and if you put black dots in a plot of all white, it would bleed together on the CRT screen giving you light blue or pink showing up around the black dots. The NES had a limited number of colors, and we wanted to give the illusion of even just the slightest bit more colorfulness. We used tricks like putting black streaks in the white mountain surface to achieve that.

>Interviewer: It seems like getting the result you envisioned on limited hardware took some creativity.

>Ishii: I think that’s all just part of a project, figuring out which methods and ideas you want to use to get your vision across.
>Viewing those same black and white mountains on an LCD screen now looks different from what we intended when the game was developed, since we input that pixel art to make use of the blurring and warping that occurs when displayed on a CRT screen.
>Today pixel art is just one form of expression and can be a way to stir up nostalgia, but I feel that back then we were trying to find ways to create an illusion for the player.

Does anyone have pictures of what the mountains look like on a CRT over RF or composite, so I know if Ishii is full of shit or not?

Not aware of any plugins that do something like this. It started out as a free emulator called 3DNES that attempted to (badly) transform any NES game into 3D.

But then went pay, changed it's name to 3DSEN, and instead relied on a curated list of games it supports that were all fine-tuned individually for the 3D effect. Although there is a community forum where people make their own addon modules to support more games in it.

There are two versions of the paid one too, one "standard" and one with VR support, although the VR one can also be run as standard too. A little worrying however that it is still listed as "Early Access" yet has not been updated since last June. Although what the last update did was remove the DRM (Although from what I understand it was just simply the Steamworks DRM)

The Oracle games specially checked if they were being played on a GBA or GBC and output a different color palette depending what they were running on.

Nobody was soloing a 40"+ rear projection tv made in the 1980s and 1990s.

I helped move one of those 80" monstrosities and it was such a pain in the ass. Dude who got it was basically duped by his friend so he could have it. The blue light and busted and tv was way out of warranty. Got to help load it back onto his truck too.

thanks for reading my blog red*tt. hit that like and subscribe

There literally exists games out today which have developer interviews talking about the effect of CRT's on their art

Masahiro Sakurai literally just released a video a couple days ago talking about displaying Kirby animations on a twin famicom (composite and rf)

I did, trashsourced a 40" rear projection CRT with a skateboard, some patience, and some lever work to get it up the stairs into my house. It helps that skateboards are basically double sided levers on wheels
