OOT was still a best seller but yeah, Zelda in general wasn't as popular as it is today back in the 80s and 90s. By that I mean it was still a series that only video game enthusiasts knew and played, normalfags may have been aware of it because of the cartoon maybe, but playing Zelda was a bit intimidating,as funny as that may sound now that video games are definitely mainstream to the fullest and Zelda (woth OOT at the top) are cemented in history. But back then, it was more likely for someone to buy a N64 to play Mario Kart 64, which is a game anyone can pick up and play, OOT is single player and needs more time investment and effort by the player. MK64 has a high skill ceiling if you want to get gud, but anyone can play it.
