>they are both past their prime making 3rd party games relying heavily on their IP
>they both have loyal fanbases that would defend them and base their entire personality around them
Which one is more insane

Atari fans for sure. Sega still puts out flagship games based on their mostly popular ips. They may have stagnated a little (their other franchises are still lacking modern-day entries), but Atari fans are still holding onto the same 40+ year old bleep bloop games they had when they were young, eagerly awaiting the next 40 dollar Atari retro collection for the PS5.

>> No.9855972

Atari fans are legit retarded
That company has been bought and sold so many times the only company that can beat that large of a phantom from its original incorporation is ADT security.

Anon, "Atari fans" are fans of the old Atari, not the current license holder. Atari fandom is 100% focused around old 80s games, nobody gives a shit about whatever all-new games nu-Atari shits out.

The Atari ST was a pretty cool computer, but their consoles were all fucking garbage, so must so they almost killed the console industry altogether with all their shitty games and lack of quality control.

Atari feels like such a strange anomaly within the retro gaming space. Their most popular console is from the 70's and doesn't hold a candle to basically anything released in the following decade. I remember looking up River Raid thinking it would look like 1942 or something and being blown away by how ugly it was lol

The thing about Atari that gets me is how little they seemed to care about vidya or gamers in general. They even seemed to outwardly despise their customers.

Atari is an investment company masquerading as a video game company, they are nothing like sega, they don't even make NEW games; just keeps releasing the slop.

Atari has some good titles, but no well known IP.

At least Sega published after two decades PSO2 and then ass raped it with NG.

I don't really care about Sega consoles that much but their arcade division was something else entirely, especially during their arms race with Namco. Even if Sega Genesis didn't exist, Sega would still be forever based in my book.
Atari arcade division was also legendary in the 80s but I wasn't alive yet so I don't appreciate it as much as Sega groundbraking 3D stuff.

>but no well known IP
Pong. Breakout. Asteroids. etc etc

The problem is more that their IPs are so heavily associated with a very basic game that makes it hard to for them to do anything NEW with it. Taito has the same problem with Space Invaders, you can't really change it up too much until it stops being recognizably Invaders.

I actually like both of their fandoms, honestly. They both like their games, and tend to be relatively obscure enough that the fans are actually deeply familiar with the content. This is less true of Sega than Atari, but I like them.

Atari has the newer vcs console that they are chugging along with but the entire company supposedly only has about 20 employees so they struggle to keep up with fixing bugs and new games but they do release some pretty cool retro stuff still.

In the late 80s to early 90s Atari WAS retro gaming, it's where the whole group started by game hunting for the console they either already owned or could only afford. The scene grew from there as new consoles released and people offloaded their "outmoded" hardware with libraries full of "outdated" games; If you can't appreciate where retro games started because they look ugly then you are no better than the people offloading their last-gen systems for the next best thing without ever considering what you had to begin with.

Atari matters. Sega is just a nearly ran from the early console wars that only really mattered to most because of the megadrive, sonic and eco the dolphin. Atari was the 2600, shit like teh 1983 starwars arcade game, Asteroids and Battlezone, Breakout, centipede, gauntlet, Missile command Pong the 400 and 800 and ST for fuck sake and I could go on. No offense sega but not in the same league or plan et in terms of legendary hardware and creations. Not even close. Atari made the video games industry

Seen someone compare Sega and Nintendo this way before. Might even be you who knows. Sega represented WCW of the 90's while Nintendo represented WWF. Sega got to win for some number of weeks just like WCW but then eventually their incompetence reared its ugly head and they essentially destroyed their own selves.

relax I'm taking the piss, the dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles, I unironically do the how could it have survived cope threads. I unfortunately think if even a library as blessed as that wanted to come out today peoples tastes have changed too radically. I'd love for nothing more than a dreamcast 2 but neither Sega nor the rest are wanting that.

atari sold off all of its IP and owns nothing anymore. the atari that currently exists can't use any titles from the past, or adapt them, without permission from rightsholders. since new atari is run by retards, nobody really wants anything to do with them and they're completely unable to create any modern versions. sega always maintained and retained its most valuable IPs, atari sold the entire farm when they went bust and scattered everything into the winds.

>> No.9867028

The problem with both companies is what can they do to gain market share in any category?

I once proposed that Atari make an open-source Raspberry Pi-esque console/computer if only to give computer buffs something to work on. The concept was to be an almost Radio Shack company that supplied instructions and hardware but minimal software. Provide a software platform for people to sell homebrew titles through an unique operating system and make money that way.

>> No.9867079

Nintendo lost the 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, generations and receded into a handheld only company and they're the only ones still deranged and angry enough they were dare competed against by companies that haven't made platforms in decades.
