Is SMB still the best one? I got SMB2 and after a few hours going through all the games and stuff came to the conclusion there was no reason to play it over the first one and I haven't touched it since. 20 years later...

music's pretty cool
level design for the main game expands upon the first one well enough
it's easier to get to the extra/master levels compared to 1
Monkey Target is better while Golf is worse.

Yes, SMB1 on GameCube specifically. Deluxe and other re-releases fuck with the physics.

1's levels are just too good. Every other game goes hard on gimmicks while 1 is just pure Monkey Balling. It's not that the others aren't worth playing, but I'd do a 1cc Master clear first, then move on to the other games.

Check out Neverball

There's a couple of non-retro clones like Rollin' Out, but I didn't find it very satisfying. I've also played Marble Blast Ultra on 360 but I wouldn't really recommend it.

Just warning anyone in the thread not to bother with Deluxe on the PS2. It's nice having levels from both games in one package but it runs like shit and constantly pauses to load compared to the silky smooth gamecube games. Don't bother unless you're a completionist and wanna play all of them

Thanks. I didn't know about that one. I couldn't imagine playing it with the dual shock analog stick. The GC one is perfect for this game and so precise with no dead zone.

I think 2's has better music and it's easier to rake up a huge amount of points, plus having multiple monkeys flying at once is fun. 1's Monkey Target is definitely more skill based in comparison but it's still fine. It's a shame Banana Mania chose to bring back neither version.

MARBLE BLAST ULTRA

Rolled out which has the exact same physics and better courses but it’s on steam and not retro. Made by a monkeyball autist who loves the series, bless his heart

Anybody ever play the monkey ball that uses the Wii fit? Is it any good? Kinda wanna buy one while they’re still like $10 so I can play that and punch out

A lot better, and the original xbox stick is far more precise.

Arguably the best sequels for SMB are the fruits of the mod community. I'd rate several of the mods made for SMB2 above the base game itself (eg Gaiden and 651). They're generally harder than the base game, but I'd bet you could still get a good amount of fun out of them even as an average player.

>> No.9858890

>>9854402
F-Zero GX was built off the physics engine used for SMB, so they have a bit more in common than one might think at first. Definitely different kinds of games, but something about the 'feel' of momentum is definitely present in both.
