Hard just isn't as fun though.
"Clock Tower" and "Escape from the Miasma District" were fine on blind Nightmare, anyway. "Necrobestial Analbuttsex" is where I started getting my anus pulped too much (though I kinda just don't like some of the fights in NBABS to be honest, like the wall that opens to reveal a shit ton of grenadiers and Enforcers on one side. The part where a platform explodes and falls was pretty great though.)

In the last thread people were talking their ideas for retro / classic style shooters and after I listened to some of youtube youtube creepypasta / cryptid things I started feeling how I'd like a FEAR-ish game where you're with a group of investigators / FBI in the backwoods hunting / investigating cryptids and strange occurrences.

Kind of Blood-ish but different places and "hunts" for each episode.

Anons who played Scourge of Armagon & The Dissolution of Eternity: have you seen its original trailer? What do you think about it? How would you described them in "expectations vs. reality" form?
In other words, what impressions you get from the trailer and what are your actual thoughts on mission packs.

Contemporary cynicism has taught me that whatever they show in the trailer is going to be the best part of the product.
Which ironically isn't true here, the mission packs have Multi-Rockets and Plasma, along with FUCKING SPIKE MINES.
The setpieces they show-off are cute (the Tumbler and Watch for Rolling Rocks specifically), but not the most impressive from an actual gameplay perspective. I actually really like the map in Scourge where you start near a lift with a Vore riding it, and some more Vores guarding a distant cliff. Cool level layouts like that are still rare tho, so I guess it's just a pleasant surprise once you start playing.
All's to say, I think the trailer doesn't quite do them justice, but it's perfectly serviceable at selling the idea of them. New weapons, enemies, AND bosses? Hell fuckin' yeah brother.

What's the consensus on KEX Engine and it's games? Faithful modernization? Blasphemous bastardization? I don't really know anything aboot it and don't see it brought up so is it just the case that it's "new thing, not retro, doesn't belong here". If so, fine, won't press the issue.

Quake post in OP says that it breaks mods so I assume it's true for other games on the platform as well. Does KEX have it's own modding support/is anyone making mods on it?

I'd say closer to this for most stuff, especially when it's pasting parts from two or three different releases together and calling it a faithful experience.

That's actually a really good point. 7 Days even has you shooting a pursuer with a stun-gun, which could be expanded upon. In fact, with the right textures, you could model the major locations from all 4 main games, and still have enough source material left-over to adapt locations from the text-based games for extra maps.
I'm beginning to overthink this.

Scource of Armagon I loved, because it expanded the techbase stuff and also mixed in techbase enemies with the "gothic" enemies like Ogres etc and it felt like a segway to Quake 2 themed but still stylistically Quake 1 sort of material. Also the boss was kick ass.

Dilation of Eternity did do nice things with the new enemies, like the super ogres, the egypt shit and the wizards, though I enjoyed it a bit less than SoA and I felt like DoE had a few more stinky winky levels in it than SoA.

The way they move around the levels and the interactions they have with the environment (diving through windows, vaulting over walls, using cover etc) is really solid. Whatever "trickery" they are doing absolutely works.

They basically designed a bunch of interactable things for them and dotted them around the encounters but didn't make it a strictly scripted thing for the most part (minus the huge ass ones kicking doors in at certain points). It gave it a more organic feeling to them reacting to you.

The other half was really them calling shit out, even if it wasn't totally accurate all the time, it made it feel like you were able to outsmart them while they were trying to get the drop on you.

Most studios don't trust the player to get that experience without basically forcing it on them in heavily scripted shit.

I love it too. Violent Rumble should get a trailer in similar style.
>>9852371
>it just the case that it's "new thing, not retro, doesn't belong here"
No. Not unless you decide to sperg about it, but even then that shouldn't cause any issues. People talked about their FPS re-releases before, not to mention other project from other studios like so-called "Unity ports" for classic DOOM's.
>What's the consensus on KEX Engine and it's games?
My experience is limited to DOOM 64, Blood: Fresh Supply and Quake. I'm going to call myself an expert because I'm not one, but I think that overall they're very servicable. This was my first time playing first two games: had tried Blood in DOSBox before, but obviously haven't got passed the room in first map.
I believe the general consensus is that Fresh Supply is the worst of the three with both DOOM 64 and Quake being very good for what they're set to do, which is offer vanilla experience right out of the box for broader audience on PC & console.
For Quake, this also includes introducing some community projects for console audience similarly to DOOM re-releases and that's nice. Another benefit of this version is also very easy option for cooperative and deathmatch play.

Fair. Like I mentioned before, I still find it oddly enjoyable to look at.
As for the personal view on mission packs, I don't know. Played them a long time ago (run through for Steam achievements once re-release was out) and I just usually don't really pick favorites. I enjoyed both and each have good moments. Music is nice, but I think I'm just very easy to please on this front. Nice to see that demos for both Packs include multiplayer matches.
If I were to get the guts for going into Quake modding & mapping, I'm definitely starting off with mixing some stuff from mission packs.

By "third" do you mean Trilby's Notes or 6 Days? Because if it's the latter, then my condolences, but at least you've already played the best in the series. Trilby's Notes is second best, but I have a fondness for 7 Days.

I did it under the assumption that the spawn's explosive death would somehow cause a hard crash, whether it was getting killed while impaled or being killed from the impaling itself. I was amused by what happened.
Though I did sort of assume that there was a size or mass limit on what could be impaled, but was proven wrong by noclipping across the map and slamming directly into a shambler by accident. The only thing I can't seem to impale are the bosses, which is probably for the best.

Newest games aside, people seem much less interested in making stuff for SW compared to the other big two. Even for Duke I haven't seen much get referenced to besides that big mod and some Die Hard themed episode.
I think they all have equal potential to have fun stuff made for them, I just find Blood the most appealing. I think this general even made a Blood mappack before any of the other build games.

Isn't that basically what the Consuming Shadow is? I recall Chzo being referenced, but not being important.
At any rate, Eldritch horror settings are a dime a gross. The only reason to entertain something like this IMO is if you have stand-out gameplay mechanics, or if you're just paying homage to something you like.
Which, circling back to the Consuming Shadow, that's why I think that could be interesting. With something like a persistent hub (one that doesn't take your inventory away or change your stats), it wouldn't be too hard to make a mystery mod/WAD with a progression system based around clues like in the Consuming Shadow, where you're hunting a cult and trying to prevent the summoning of an Eldritch being.

You're both retarded. The meme didn't "hijack" shit. It was an emergent representation of how the culture viewed itself. It is an archetype spawned by the collective unconscious of Doom players. It's not arbitrary. It wasn't just some "random" thing someone wrote that "just happened" to "take over" the game's image. It articulated the essence of Doom and the direction the players had been always moving.

Found the secondary. Just kidding.

But I'll say that even the intermission texts, hanging corpses, gore sprites and a variety of other things in the original game really lean into the edgy splattery shit, despite that not being explicitly stressed in Tom Hall's Doom design documents so some super contrarian might argue that line of thought.
And on Brutal Doom Romero remarked basically just that wow, it sure goes above and beyond without indication that it's in bad taste.

Personally I do find Brutal Doom to be in bad taste but mostly because I've let the thing in itself be ruined by it's fans, a rookie mistake when it comes to enjoying things and interacting with """le community""". GZDoom kids who treat it as default setting for experiencing some excellent boom maps. Christ. But I digress. Doom was always pretty edgy and if anything just the modding community maturing up and realizing a bit more substance is needed is what created the "high octane lightly strategy shooter" type deal you're referring to.

Unreals original UI was generic for the era, and I don't really like Golds. I don't even hate EGS.

I'm not going to spitball about how an alternate universe would be shit based on how things are already shit. A new Unreal with old gameplay and modern graphics/design (in some areas) COULD be amazing.
For instance we talked recently about how there are these long travel times and huge vistas. All they need is some accompanying music that matches the trip. The world could have some better built in story telling that shows the persecution of the Nali, the battles fought by the humans from the isv kran/vortex rikers - rather than relying more heavily on the logs (which I still love). The logs themselves could have voice acting.
There are a lot of ways an Unreal remake could be amazing, or even a sequel.
And the tech they're pushing now seems like a perfect fit.

There wasn’t much in 2 or 4 that felt like it answered much, so just at face value the “Strogg” appear to be some sort of secret military weapon or old “superweapon tech” that basically went full Shodan: Humans getting forcibly meched-up and/or already meched-up soldiers getting taken over by some crazy AI. Years of isolation from everyone else helped turn them into what they are now. There were also some small humanoid monkey things in that cancelled expansion for 4.
In the current age of everyone wanting Marvel-sized wikipages, there’s now likely something definitive from Champions.

What could be inferred from levels is also inherently more interesting than what's been in any of their lore wikis.

I literally put my first map in a /vr/ project and it was fine other than the rooms being a little square looking back and not knowing a couple vanilla texture tricks
I'm thinking of a 1996 style minisode so I guess I'd have to catbox it myself, since I don't have a doomworld account or nothing

Vindicated is shoving in Project Brutality shit in with it, so it's like three or four layers deep of jamming crap from other mods into a mod and calling it innovation.

Besides the extra bullshit the other anons mentioned, there's also custom monsters with inflated HP to help "balance" the mod.
Except now you're firing massive nukes and monsters will shrug it off, it's like firing a BFG into an imp and he walks away unscathed.

Trailblazer is pretty great, and the least broken of the Pillowblaster mods.

Still pretty broken though, get both mods on just about any weapon and you can pretty much use exclusively that weapon, especially by supplementing ammo drops with the ammo crafting.

>Adds new dehacked standard for additional codepointers, things, states.
>In 2002 for dos.
Unsurprisingly, I heard about it mostly in contrast to mbf21 and dehextra. I think if the author released it a bit earlier then prboom may have added a fusion complevel in the early 2000s, and If that happened it probably would've been the default for a lot of ambitious projects. It's only a minor missed opportunity though, since compared to those two it still lacks a lot of useful stuff (No custom angled projectiles, homing projectiles, hitscan, melee, dehardcoded thing flags, extra sound slots, etc.). It seems like the author was haphazardly adding things he thought were cool without concern for flexibility in a similar way to many mbf features. I like how he can't even remember his own features in the dehackin.txt file.
The new port for modern systems is a nice thought, but designing around it in 2023 would be pretty pointless save for abundant contrarian points. Which reminds me of the time I tried making a map for RorDoom, the room over room capabilities are so limited I couldn't make anything more ambitious than the provided demo maps and promptly gave up.

Any semi-faithful SC-55-likes, I'm not a total snob about it. Anything that's too harsh and power metal I hate. If it has to be a radical departure from SC-55 I prefer the murky synth ones.

It's pretty rancid, but that's kind of what you get when someone gets forced to just absolutely rush a port in 10 weeks because the guy who said his company could do it, actually couldn't do anything at all for it, short of the music, which is actually pretty nice.
