When I was a kid, I had no idea anything but the DX (color) version existed. I recently played the original out of curiosity, and I can see the appeal of the monochrome palette. It’s comfy, nightmarish, and feels like a dream.

I was one of the first anons who brought up how the monochrome has more seamless tilesets a few years back. Then another anon also noticed it and started actually making comparison pics and arguing with another anon who would get mad because he felt DX's legacy was threatened.
In my opinion, DX is good too. Extra content is good, and having colors is good (especially if you play on a real GBC as it's meant to be enjoyed), but it's absolutely true that the original monochrome has also good things going for it and shouldn't be ignored in favor of DX. DX did not make the original obsolete.
Both versions can cohexist.

Ironically, DX fanboys chimp out the most. I and the anon you replied to like both versions and think they both have their place, but a lot of people that played DX first mistakenly believe it's a straight upgrade from the original (despite having numerous changes, including gameplay and color-unrelated art design).
