I'd say Konami's Kukeiha Club was absolute peak of vidya music in mid-90s.

The same happens to me with Jesper Kyd; he pushed the hardware to the limit with very experimental scores but once he had more capacity and freedom to work with as the technology for consoles improved, his songs started to sound like cookie-cutter orchestra.
