Mother 3's style and themes are very far removed from Earthbound. That said it is a great game. I wouldn't be confident calling it better or worse. It's different.

>> No.984134

I remember getting some pan from a dinosaur but since it was weaker than what I had equipped I sold it at the nearby village (inventory management was a pain in this game). A few hours later on a forum I learned it was one of those super rare weapons, aw crap.

Before that I only knew about the sword which I couldn't get after almost 3 hours at the base, but at least the levels gained on that grind made the rest of the game somewhat easy.

At the end I enjoyed it but I don't see myself going at it again.

Damn, yeah that frypan is the 1/128 drop weapon for Paula. But you know what? it's not the strongest for her... I grinded for days and weeks until I got it, then found out it wasn't the most powerful was disappointing. Probably it has a better critical hit rate though, not sure.

I made sure to get all the rare drops before the end of the game since you can't go back after you travel to the cave of the past, so now only the Gutsy Bat is left, every now and then I play a bit while taking a dump (playing on GBA), hoping to get it dropped from a Bio Kraken.

pic is when I got the sword of kings. honestly, getting that frypan from the dinosaurs was a lot tougher and time consuming.

That's still the only weapon I've never gotten, and I'm not horribly motivated to grind for it now.

I'm still amused how clueless young me was about my luck getting the Gutsy Bat, though. I mean, I realized it was cool but had no idea it was usually hard to get.

>> No.987947

I've really been trying to enjoy Earthbound. But it's just so tedious to me. I'm not a big fan of turn-based combat, but I decided to give this a go, because of all the praise it's given.

I always thought that, at least in the few RPGs I've played, that when you go to use a healing item, you use that first, before the enemy attacks again. But, in Earthbound, I am constantly subject to "enemy suddenly does absurd amounts of damage to me - I select hamburger - enemy does more absurd amounts of damage - I wake up in my house for the 1000000 time."

Also, fuck that mushroom that was on my head. "You did critical damage! ... to yourself." Oh, look, I'm back at the house.

Even as I progress, it just seems really slow. I'm hoping once I get some comrades to help, it picks up for me.

Somehow I end up playing the games in reverse which honestly what I would recommend to people who want to get into the series.

Mother 3 humor and story is the only thing that got me to play Earthbound. I like the Earthbound gameplay better but if it wasn't for playing Mother 3 first I doubt I would have finish it. Of course I shouldn't have to say why Mother should be last on the list. You really need to enjoy the series to play the first game.

That just my opinion anyway. On that note Mother's Duncan's Factory is kinda stopping me like a brick wall. I want to explore the whole area so I am kinda drawing a simple map but that is kinda sucking the fun out of it. That place remind me of Snakes and Ladders honestly.

>> No.988028

>>987982
You're thinking of the anti-piracy checks, which are safely bypassed on most emulators. Pirated earthbound carts would drastically increase numbers of enemies.

I am not the biggest Earthbound fan, but it's not nearly as difficult or oppressive as is suggested. Enemies do high damage because the game encourages you to really use everything at your disposal, unlike some JRPGs which basically let you mash A until you win. Basically, pull out all the stops.

>> No.988031

>>987982
Also for the grind, this is typical of most 80s RPGs, and Earthbound, despite its kooky setting and writing, is very traditional. Unfortunately that does mean a high amount of grinding, but it's not really absurd. We're not talking Korean MMOs or anything.

I finished Mother 3 a couple of days ago, was my first Mother game. I tried to play Mother Zero, but I have this voice in my head telling me that it's pointless because Earthbound is somewhat of a remake (I don't even know if this is true at all, just that they share a lot of elements in common). I started both Mother Zero and Earthbound, but lost my saves.

That said, I loved Mother 3, but I found it a bit simple. More content would've been great (more quests, for example). I took my time with the game, it lasted me 23 hours since I grinded to Lv.60 to get every PK. So, how's Earthbound in the content department?

>Earthbound is somewhat of a remake (I don't even know if this is true at all, just that they share a lot of elements in common)

It's not, they have things in common (similar main character, amongst other things) but the plot is completely, utterly different. I agree with those who think Mother 1 has a better plot, Mother 2 is cool, but the plot isn't as good... the best thing about M2 are the dialogues or different situations, but the plot isn't really all that impressive or detailed (nor it tries to be).

Mother 2 (Earthbound) is a direct sequel to Mother 1, if you play Mother 2 first, you will have no clue about why the antagonist is invading Earth or what his original intetions were.

I mean, you can play them separately and take them as stand alone games, but they aren't, and it's more enjoyable to play in release order, I think its the definitive Mother experience, playing M2 or 3 first will only make you dislike Mother 1 due to it being dated.

Poo also learns Freeze spells, albeit not to the same level as Paula, and Lifeup, albeit not to the same level as Ness. Plus, he's top tier at Healing spells.
It's better if you think of Poo not as a powerhouse in his own right, and more as backup. He does a little of everything, and assists where needed. He helps out the other characters and makes their jobs a little easier.

Besides, Ness already hits things harder than any other character and heals everyone in an instant, Paula blasts everything with high powered wide range and focused psychic ability, and Jeff blows everything up with rockets and bazookas for incredible damage.
What exactly is left for him?

I remember when Earthbound wasn't such a widely discussed thing. I'm not bothered by newer folks getting into it but I noticed that it has more of a presence than it used to.

Now that there's a visible BEFORE and AFTER it makes reminiscing about the game odd for me. I storyboarded and laid out an Earthbound cartoon a few years ago. I probably won't animate the thing because I don't like trying to get in touch with voice actors and I'm about to go back to college.

Word of advice, when you obtain the Book of Memories, use it to practice on your rhythm combos. When you combo an enemy with the music, a music note will display. You can do a maximum of 16 hit combos. Make sure you don't always follow the same instruments while you follow the rhythm if you feel that you're making no progress. I once kept following the drum and bass to a certain song, only to fail leaving me unable to pass a 2 hit combo. I later discovered I hate to actually follow the high hat's pattern instead. Hope this info helped.

Mother is a good game, but it's a matter of people being able to handle an old school Famicom/NES RPG and appreciate it for what it is. It has aged, but holds much charm. The story's also nice too. I have noticed that the game does lose some steam after Fourside. What I loved about the first four areas were entering a new location, talking to the townspeople, finding there is a problem, searching for the root of the problem which is always really bloody strange then seeing the effect that alleviating the problem has on the townspeople.

You don't get that feeling in Summers, Scaraba, Winters or the Underground Kingdom. You just pass through them, not leaving any effect. It happens in the Tenda Village, though.

More so, if you really DO want to grind, once you can one or two shot an enemy, the game doesn't even go into the battle screen. The screen just flashes and you get awarded EXP, and then you keep walking.

Mother 2 >>>>>> Mother 3

Mother 2 is a wonderful game, an aesthetic adventure, has the best OST i've ever heard in a videogame, has so much qualities that it doesn't bother itself with some scenario, just an uncluttered, ironical storyline.

Mother 3 is a nice, visually beautiful game but contains mainly emo bullshit, although I find it difficult to imagine adults being moved by its soppy story and poor criticism of society or whatever.

It's just my opinion.

I own Mother 3, but I can't remember if the input for the rhythm combos was any better, it probably is.

Anyway what you need to know is that you don't really need to pull off long combos to survive in the game, it's just a little extra that makes battles more fun, but you can beat the game ignoring it completely.

Anyways, here's a trivia game from Mother 3.

In New Pork City, in the projection room of the theatre there are two wax statues.

When you examine the statues the text says...

"At first glance, it seems like this might be a
movie-loving boy named Toto or something,
but he's actually just a figure made out of clay
and dough, holding a bucket."

Do you know the reference?

Cinema Paradiso is famous for its FEELS-INDUCING ending montage. The boy is an old man by the time he watches this montage, and the theatre he grew up in had been demolished.

The montage is meant to remind him of his childhood and of the warm times he had watching films. Only the main character, and the audience, would recognize the scenes in the montage. The whole sequence is TEAR-INDUCING, to say the least.

In Mother 3, the theatre is displaying a MONTAGE of famous moments from Earthbound. Porky is the only person that would remember moments from that game--aside from the PLAYER. It's supposed to be a teaching scene in the game because the images are of warmer times from the previous game, and this difference in tone is further heightened by how dystopian New Pork City is.

This reference is not just a name check but a conscious effort by the designers to really convey a specific mood and feeling.

Genius. Fucking. Game.

UPDATE: My mom is up to Scaraba, now.

>> No.1023612

Wow I just lost a battle on Earthbound.
I'm level 99 on all characters, and I only keep playing because I looking for a Gutsy Bat drop, which, along with the Magical Frypan, is the hardest and most annoying rare drop to obtain in the game (Swords of King is babby's first rare drop).

Wow I just got raped and I'm level 99.

I was fighting a Starman ancestor, a Final Starman and an Energy Robo.
I tried to escape the battle (I always try to scape, since naturally I'm only looking to fight the most rare enemy in the area, the Kraken Bio), but it failed, and one of the starman fucks used brainshock omega. Both Ness and Poo became confused, the other Starman used PK Starstorm and immediately killed both Poo and Paula.
Ness and Jeff managed to survive, somehow, because anything I did was useless, Ness was confused (I tried healing omega, but it healed all the enemies) and Jeff couldn't land a single attack since they had a physical shield, and all my attacks were mirrored, and ended up damaging Jeff, so physical attacks were no good at all! Besides, the enrgy robo kept healing the Starmen, so my goal became the Energy Robo, if I managed to destroy him, I could try to revive Paula or Poo and try to do something about all the status aliments, but this way, having Ness confused and Jeff useles, it was bound to be a loss.
Somehow, Ness got cured of the brainshock-caused aliment, so I could start using life up omega to heal him and Jeff, somehow, a bit of hope appeared on the horizon.
But yet, it was useless, both Starmen wouldn't stop spamming PK Starstorm (which is mostly an instakill attack, if it wasn't for the HP rolling bar mechanic, I owuld have been dead already), then I used life up omega in every turn, I couldn't try to revive anyone since I had to waste that turn recovering HP. (CONT)

>> No.1023629

>>1023612

(CONT)

With Jeff, I continued to try and eliminate the Energy Robo, but then the energy robo started healing himself, no worry about the Starmen since anyway I couldn't land any physical attack with jeff on them.
I had to use Ness to heal in every turn since the PK Starstorm hell wouldn't stop.
At some point, the Starmen would try a different attack, so I could breath a bit with Ness, and try a different strategy. I tried to revive Paula or Poo a few times (with Healing Gamma... that works for reviving, right?) but it didn't work since it's a random-generated result, sometimes it doesn't work. So I lost a few turns there, on a mean time I tried to cause other aliments with Jeff, I had an item called Anti-PSI Machine, but I don't know, it just didn't work on any of the 3 enemies.

In the end, I ended up using PK Ape (or Rockin', I selected Ape which is one of the default names for "your favorite things) omega and actually killed the starmen in 2 turns using it. The thing is that it had to be quick because my HP was already rolling down from a PK Starstorm or two. As for the Energy Robo, I kept attacking him with Jeff but he wouldn't die.
Jeff died, now it was only the Energy Robo and a dying Ness, I had to be quick!... but nope, Energy Robo just healed himself, while Ness ended up dying.

Now, now... I wouldn't have lost this battle if I didn't start it by trying to escape it, obviously that's a turn loss. Then, having both Ness and Poo being affected by brainshock was a disgrace, and the fact the Starmen use a physical shield to return physical attacks is completely dickish on developers' part, hah. Not complaining, what would an RPG be without dick enemies?

I don't know... I needed to write this down because I was just casually playing the game while taking a dump, I always do it, looking for Kraken Bios, to see if they drop the god damned Gutsy bat, and I wasn't expecting to lose a battle in such a brutal way.
