What happened to the buyfag thread?
What have (You) bought recently or plan on buying?

I was waiting for this to arrive so I could show it to everyone. Got them for really cheap (60 eurodollars the whole package + shipping), mint condition almost.

>> No.9830038

It died because e-celebs got into a price ramping war and games are astronomical now. Someone posted a metal jesus rocks picture earlier today where he straight up said "I post these videos to patreon first so that my subscribers can get at the games before the price ramp happens." That kind of shit is why buyfag threads have slowed down, and mister/handheld/emulation threads have ramped up.

Everything is a hustle and grift these days unfortunately. You can still find good deals here and there if you take your time to browse and don't fall for scalper meme games.

I saw that, and for the most part I agree with you. I always find a few good things during garage sale season because I typically stop and browse for a few minutes whenever I see one, so the lack of that may have a little something to do with it.

I think buyfagging has died for a lot of people. There's just very little point in paying some of the extreme (american) retro video game prices these days. If you're all hardcore with it, you can just import the JP releases of video games you like for 10% of the price. But that's for JP speakers.
For me personally, these days, I'm a mix of importing JP games and modifying hardware. For example, I threw a hard drive into my PS2 and that's more or less all the effort you need to exert in order to play the entire PS2 library, on your PS2, on your television. I should clean up my file names, I'm a little lazy in that regard. Even so, I still physically own my childhood games, or games I just really enjoy, like the copies of Ar Tonelico 1 & 2 I got for around maybe 2 USD each. If you have a nice little television, and already own the game consoles you're interested in, I think hardware modding is the best option. All this being said, I did recently score Arc the Lad 1, 2, and 3 for around 10 USD total. That'll be neat to have.

Seconding what this anon said. It's a totally hollow and soulless imitation of collecting the real thing, but I enjoy perusing romhacks, translations, color enhancements, etc. and collecting those now. Having a clean, well named and curated rom library with nice art is enjoyable, and anytime I want to play roms on something I have a collection I know is high quality relative to my tastes. Like I said, it's totally empty compared to collecting the real thing, but I enjoy it regardless and it's something that's accessible to anyone.

I'm doing the exact same thing, getting the consoles, modding them to play backups and then buying one or the other game I care about. I typically don't even open the game, just keep them in a plastic sleeve and play the backup copy.

I've seen copies of Ar Tonelico 1 going for over 200 at some point, which is pretty fucking ridiculous.

I plan on buying up a bunch of PAL gamecube cases to replace the shitty ass cases burgerland got. I feel like im going to break my discs taking them out of the holder while euros got a very nice "push n release" version.

Crazy, isn't it? I think if I sold all the dot hack games I own for the PS2, I'd get something like 500 USD+ for them in total. Just checked and yeah.

I actually didn't know that was a thing. The GC jap cases seem worse than both regions too.

>> No.9830180

>>9830156
Yea the jap cases have a great form factor, but doing cardboard slip cases instead of at the very least plastic was a retarded decision and still have the dumb ntsc holder for the discs, though idk the plastic doesn't seem as bad. I only have one pal game, doshin the giant, and when i went to play it last night i was impressed by how much nicer they were especially since few days earlier i almost had a fit thinking i was going to break my Kirby air ride getting it out. Its funny cause those cases even have a warning in them to not remove the discs in the exact manner usa and jap discs have to be.

Their form factor is great, wish we got the same but actually having to unsleeve the cardboard case every time you want to play is a bad thing. I imagine those things wouldn't last a week in the hands on NA/EU kids.

One time my friend found a dot hack game at a game store for $4. Then we drove to another game store and sold it for some crazy amount.
I've talked to employees at such stores before and they say they can't find anyone to work who doesn't fuck up on the prices.
Pic related is my find. I bet it was taken in and priced by two different people.

Being a buyfag just isn't worth it anymore. All the 35 to 55 year olds who still live with their moms and don't even play modern games, thus aren't even gamers, siphoned up all the games and now yardsales and thrift stores don't have anything anymore.

Thankfully, there are only 500ish games left that I actually want to play and own, and only maybe 200 of them are games I'd go out of my way to find, but its all so stupidly expensive now.

My two most recent purchases are for Sega Genesis. TMNT Hyperstone Heist in the original Box. And Splatterhouse 3 with repro box and manual.
I used to own Hyperstone Heist, but it got lost from being borrowed. I've wanted that game back for a long time. And I used to rent Splatterhouse 3 all the time. I'm freaking excited to own a real cartridge for it.

I buy pal at charity shops. Its a fun hobby and I grow the collection by 4 or 5 games a week. I play the games I buy but am trying to store up a nice media collection before they become unattainable and will keep buying ps1/ps2/xbox/360/PC vintage games and for the consoles peripherals like microphones, instruments, dance mats. game buzzers, light guns, cameras and motions sensors, living toy platforms etc. I'm only interested in these because they are the last consoles for pure physical media and for me at least, consoles died with the wii/ps3/xbone and are now dead. I pay almost nothing though especially for PC big box and DVD cases. I love my collection and really enjoy playing it

>>9833093
Local ads, local shops, antique shops, ebay, buyee etc. Specialized retro shops (outside of Japan) will have huge price markups so just forget them. Don't just buy the first ad you see but keep browsing, comparing, mulling over it, negotiate... and if you think it's a good deal then go for it.

>>9832878
(Not /vr/) I started the 360 already but I'm quickly finding out all the games got ports to other consoles or PC so it's moot. Really cheap to collect right now, you can buy lots of games $2 to $5. I think the most expensive I've seen have been Zone of the Enders collection and My Beautiful Katamari.

I live in Japan, so I just buy JP copies of games. I could order them online, but I enjoy the thrill of the hunt as much as playing the games themselves, so I like to look around Bookoffs and the like for games I'm after.
I collect horror games, but I have almost all of the really expensive ones already. Just need Mad Panic Coaster and Laplace no Ma now.

I'm not interested in hardware modding- for me that defeats the point of buying the game physically in the first place. I don't care about keeping the game 100% immaculate, even if it did cost over 300 dollars as a few of my games have. Just want to play them.

yeah I skimmed through the archives to see what other anons recommended for case replacements. some said the ones from ULINE are good because they're identical to the PS1's and come in bulk, while others said to check around thrift shops, records stores, or wherever is cheapest.
