Are there any decent 3rd-party N64 controllers out there? Preferably something with a longer cable than the regular ones.

>> No.982630

I had one that was pretty good... for a few months, but when the stick started to wear it would make my guys move around on their own. I guess the stick was too sensitive.

Madcatz makes a good N64 controller.

bump. I'm interested as well.

I wish I knew a good one. I never quite understood why they chose a third handle in the design, and never understood why they chose such a great D-PAD to rarely be used in any game and never used in any good game .

Are you saying Kirby 64 is not a good game?

>> No.982660

Superpad 64 or the Hori Mini.

That is all

Yes, I am. It is slow, too easy (although this is basically every kirby game ever), and just boring (walk right, now FLOAT OVER EVERYTHING, SPAM THE SAME ATTACK, NEVAR DIE!! WIIIIINN!!!!). However, it is mildly pleasing, and I enjoyed it for a brief time as a child.

Well... the things you listed aren't really wrong. I disliked that about 64. The level design in particular seemed pretty weak compared to other installments. Few really good ones though.

See, my problem is that they haven't brought back the combo system. Sure, a few powers were useless, but it was a cool system that added a lot of different powers. A Kirby game with that today would be pretty rad.

This reminds me, I still need to play Return to Dreamland.

mischief makers?

I remember loving the International Super Star Soccer games, but sports games are an acquired taste, I guess.

not just the difficulty, but the other things you mentioned are pretty much true of all kirby games if you decide to play them that way. i think kirby 64 is exceptional, the combo power system makes it an absolute blast, more room for personal favorites. the music and world design is also great.

So, is there an official website for these controllers that doesn't sell used controllers for an outrageous amount of money?

>>982669
I did love the combo system. If Kirby games had a little more difficulty, and was sped up a considerable amount, it may have been one of my favorite games. Kirby on the NES was a step in the right direction, but I have only played the two games.

>>982671
Never played it, but it looks like a pretty good game actually. I may check it out, because I really want to be able to use that D-PAD.

sage because I didn't mean to derail the thread.

There wasn't much of a thread in the first place, I don't mind. Already got my answer anyway.

64 was, in all honesty, my first Kirby game, so of course it holds a special place in my heart, but I think my favorite so far is Nightmare in Dreamland.

These must be good, they're pretty expensive.

Also, which superpad is better, the one that looks a little like the vanilla controller on the one that looks like a completely different controller entirely?

>> No.982750

They are only expensive because they were Japan exclusive, officially licensed by Nintendo, 3rd party controllers produced late in Nintendo 64's production for a limited time.

but I still fucking want one
I swear, it honestly looks like the best controller to ever grace the console, and I wish more were made. The prices are atrocious, but I have paid more for technology relative to videogames, and it seems like it may last for a long time by the reviews. The only real issue that is apparent is the D-PAD, but if you have an original controller, then all of your problems are solved.

Did you know that they make extension cords?

If you liked wrestling as a kid, get the AKI/THQ WCW and WWF games. The D-pad was for movement, while flicking the stick did taunts and activated special moves.

Bust-A-Move 2 allows the player to use either the D-pad or the thumb-stick for aiming. I find the D-pad to be better for short, precise movement.

Resident Evil 2 is another game that lets you choose between the stick and the pad. Seeing as this game is ported over from a console whose controller was originally designed without any sort of stick, I'm currently playing through this using just the D-pad.

The Hori Mini is the only good one I know of. I speedrun an N64 game and I couldn't imagine not using it. The analog stick is as good or better than a Gamecube's. The only problem is that it's kind of small, if you have huge hands you might find it uncomfortable. Oh and the d-pad is basically worthless, but you can use a normal N64 controller for that, I suppose.

Yes, it's ridiculously expensive (mine cost me about $75 with tax and shipping) but it seems like the kind of thing that would last forever, so I heartily recommend it.
