If I replace the batteries for the save of a cartridge game, does that mean losing the save too? If so, doesn't that mean I'm destined to lose my saves eventually, regardless of replacing the batteries?

Yes, if the battery dies or is replaced, the save goes too. You can find a method of backing it up if you really needed to save it. My Life In Gaming had a video on the topic.

I think you can connect another battery in parallel so it keeps the same voltage applied when you remove the other battery. That's also how you keep your radio settings in your car if you need to disconnect your battery

if you're a madman you can just change out the battery while the game is on

I don't understand why people get so attached to save files, besides pokemon because they're compatible with other games.
If I haven't touched a game for a few years I'm going to restart anyway.

It was important for Indy to keep those Legend of Zelda save files for prosperity sake...

Unless you somehow provide power from an alternate source to the SRAM chip during the battery replacement, yes.

Not if you do what I mentioned or have a device that can read the data off the cartridge, like a Retron, a Retrode, or preferably Sanni's cart reader. Likely other such devices exist too.

Empty lives and autism.

Use a cart reader to dump your saves first. EZ.

If you replace the batteries in a cart that only has one battery you've got bigger problems than losing a save.

Visited my childhood animal crossing save on memory card slot b a couple of days ago. Heard the town tune I wrote which was neat. Played the Zelda NES and it had saves that my friends made with their names. It's a good idea to back up all of your interesting saves at least. Maybe you don't need the save file from batman on Sega Genesis and etc

it took me about 4 years to beat GTA: LCS on PS2, I would play the game a bit every now and again, often not touching it in months

I had no idea there was any love on the internet for Crimson Shell. Like that is the first time I've ever seen anyone on the internet post it but me.
