They basically wanted to go "LOOK, SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT ON THE GBA! but not really...", hence all the other stuff like two similar castles, Dracula's boss-box in the center, having to wear two matching rings/bracelets, the room decoration gimmick that IIRC was originally supposed to be in SotN, etc.

Finally someone, who sees, what HoD is! Despite preferring SotN, HoD isjust enough distincts through general horror details like that spiked leg with lift on blood pool, all that backgrounds and soundtrack to be unique enough, while deriving many style parts from SotN - just enough to be second best after said SotN. Just like SotN was a mystery compared to Rondo, Harmony of Dissonance is a mystery compared to SotN - but now from human eyes perspective rather than a son of Dracula, for whom this castle is partially a home rather than strange and unknown dungeon - Alucard's travel feels like checking all that unused wings, old basements with lots of dad and grandpa things - new and nostalgic at the same time, while Juste goes into the unknown horrors of demonic lair to restore his maiden and to figure out, what is going on with his friend - confusion on what is going on, but determination to rescue - while Alucard is more like "Hm, some troubles again - oh well, looks like have to do some cleaning routine - strange, dad was supposed to be here, better investigate".

My guys. This whole thing about HoD having a horror vibe and the story being a mystery where your ninja best friend is losing his shit is how I've always felt about the game.

I never completely agreed with the whole "oh it's a bad GBA port of SoTN" thing. There's deliberate similarities meant to capitalize on it, sure, but I think as a game, HoD manages to be distinct despite reusing SoTN's template and some of its ideas. Juste doesn't handle much like Alucard, for one thing.
