I've stumbled on a band I think /vr/ may be able appreciate. Yellow Magic Orchestra, a Japanese electronic band from the 70's.

Apparently they were a huge influence on video game musicians, and it sounds like it. They even sample some games from the time in their music. I hope you enjoy.

I found the band only about two years ago, but I really wish I had found them earlier as a fan of chiptunes, spacesynth and italo disco. I still think it's incredible that there was actually such an obvious influence for video game music instead of it developing on its own around technical limitations and bedroom-programmer-musicians own styles.

Even though the first albums (where OP's songs came from) were made around 1980 they still sound really incredible, both sound and songwriting wise.

YMO thread on my /vr/?

Yes, they are on par with Kraftwerk as far as relevance on electronic music goes.
I'd kill to see them live, at least I got to see Ryuichi Sakamoto along with Alva Noto last year.

If you want to listen to another good japanese techno pop band, check out Denki Groove:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLcEMdJUWS4
(watch all 12 parts, it's a TV special about the band's 20th anniversary, all in moon, but it has a lot of exclusive live and music clips, just skip the interivew parts if you can't understand japanese).

Denki Groove has Takkyu Ishino as the main programmer and composer, who is basically the most important Techno producer from Japan right now. Their main influences are Kraftwerk, YMO, New Order, Depeche Mode, etc, but they have their own sound (you can clearly hear their YMO influences anyway, listen to "Fake it!", for example, Takkyu usually mixes YMO tracks on his DJ sets too, he spinned Raydeen in Europe a few times)

To make this more vidya-related, Takkyu Ishino produced the entire Ghost In The Shell game (PS1) soundtrack, and the opening theme is his'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x76Z9HGvlLs

Denki Groove is pretty bizarre, and although their music is some of the finest Techno ever produced, their lyrics and live performances are all about tongue in cheek, absurd humor. I especially like Denki Groove because they are the anti-thesis of what an electronic musician or DJ should be: they are not "cool", they try hard NOT to be cool, and end up being the coolest in the end.

This is definitely one of my favorite DG performances:

They do have their 80s new wave sensibilities, but no, they are closer to being the japanese Devo, or the japanese Der Plan... but they actually have their own distinct personality I think, they mix techno with comical performances.
But yes they have their good share of 80s synthpop-ness. Their albums are always pretty variated though, so you might find a romantic, newwave track, and next to it an absurd, avant garde experimental track, they always keep it interesting so it doesn't gets boring, that's why I love them so much.

This is how they presented themselves in Germany back in 1998:

Have you heard No More Landmines?

it was a special single Sakamoto released to help people who live in countries filled with abandoned landmines.

Some artists who collaborated on the single: Kraftwerk, David Sylvian, Cyndi Lauper, Dreams Come True (famous for their leader's soundtracks on Sonic 1 and 2 for Genesis, vidya-wise), Sugizo (famous Jrocker from the band Luna Sea), Taeko Onuki (famous female singer from the 80s, has a particular deep voice for a Japanese woman, also she sang the "Love Theme" for Mother 3), etc, etc a lot of artists collaborated on it, and I personally think it's one hell of a track, way better than "USA for africa":
