The sandbox in Far Cry 1 and Crysis is underbaked, on paper you have so called stealth options but AI is so broken it doesnt make any sense (even with patches, I played non steam older version a lot back in the days). Far Cry 3 is what Crysis wanted to be, the sandbox with freedom to approach combat actually however you want

I played this for the first time a year ago after wanting to play it as a kid but never got around to it and other than the semi-open island setting which would have been interesting for the time this game is shit. Big letdown for me really.

I own the game and have since it came out, my brother was the one who played it, however. after playing far cry 4 and even 2, I have the same feeling about the first game as what you just said. there is a chance that it was really good when it came out, but it has been improved upon so much since then that the original isn't worth getting into. plus I watched a GGGManLives video on the first game and some of the later half of the game it seems really hokey and out of place.
