I think the realtime ligh/darkness mechanics in this game are pretty clever and impressive, specially for a game that had a PS1 release. Still, the setting and creatures were boring and the structure too linear.

In general the game is clearly guilty of lowering itself to copy its own imitator rather than developing the unique traits of its original concept (dropping the period setting was a baffling creative choice to begin with)

>>9815784
1 is fine, but it's basically designed like a point-and-click adventure in terms of structure and puzzles (and then turns into an awkward action game for the last stretch), which relieves a little too much of the potential atmosphere of dread and, yeah, "survival" aspects. But the controls really aren't that bad at all (basically on par with RE1's imo).

It was just plain pointless to make 2 a straight action game. 3 was also a missed opportunity since the horror/Weird West setting was really cool potentially as well.

Exactly; that was serviceable (at best) for a game in which combat was just an ancillary aspect, but doubling down on in as the focus of the sequel/s was a recipe for disaster. Also, the best thing about AitD in comparison to RE imo is how open it felt (except for the final part), and that's another thing they simply dumped for the sequels, which are essentially corridor games.

Or to put it another way: it's not as much as a matter of an "oval wheel" as this anon put it >>9815576, but about a maybe too heavy and a little wonky but still serviceable basketball that they proceeded to try and use for lacross, for two matches in a row too. New Nightmare is blatantly RE inspired. I dont see that as horrible though, RE is good and it doesnt hurt to have more of a good thing. The game has great atmosphere and graphics.

Not retro but it reminds me of how Shadow Warrior 2013 did arena/wave FPS before Doom 2016, which probably took cues from it, then the latest Shadow Warrior obviously took cues from what Doom 2016 added to the formula. Its a give & take relationship.

>New Nightmare is blatantly RE inspired
True, but it at least tried to do its own thing by recovering the original light/darkness gameplay concept they wanted for the original game but couldn't pull off at the time.

It really didn't amount to much, but they saved some face for me since they weren't as lazy as they could have been.

I found the enemies to be really annoying to fight in this game. They all seem to have some annoying gimmick. And I think they respawn. I don't know, maybe I'm just bad but I enjoy fighting the enemies in RE way more. Maybe you're supposed to run away most of the time in New Nightmare.

This one had a lot of really cool ideas. They were all extremely half assed though, and the game has no idea if it wants to be linear or open world. It cant even decide if it wants to be first person or third person.
The inventory system is really cool and should be attempted in other games, and it's the only game I ever played where I was required to manually blink because the main character is too stupid to do it on his own and will go blind after long enough (this one wasnt a cool feature, its just so ridiculous that it's always worth noting).

The reliance on using traps and baiting enemies while playing as the kid was also kino.

Well that's sort of interesting in concept but in execution it's literally finding items and placing them (in an early constrained area of the game that doesn't really give you much leeway too). That's a recurring problem with the game for me: the concepts of the puzzles are usually interesting but get botched in execution.

Like the portrait gallery puzzles >>9815701, which are somewhat goofy but interesting. In the end the difficulty comes from navigating the awkward set of cameras to position yourself and shoot the arrow at the portrait more than any clever conceptual riddle.
