The decision to port so many computer games and introduce online play destroyed the original merits of videogames. Someday an author will elucidate the design differences between challenging platformers and arcade-based games in regard to the more literalistic American PC games -- the thing to note here however is that PC gaming is really all that remains.

The 6th Generation was the end of the Arcade era.

Previously arcades were king. And arcade games had bright and colorful graphics to draw people to the machine and spend money. Sega, Konami, Namco, SNK, etc were all known for this. These same bright colorful games were ported then over to the 5th Generation of consoles.

But the arcade market crashed hard during the early 2000s. So the 6th Gen of consoles wasn't as influenced by Arcade games anymore. They started doing their own thing. Bright and colorful arcade style games were "out" . Now 6th gen was era of developers experimenting. This somehow led to a lot of beige and browns. Lots of "gritty" and realistic games with a dark color pallette.

The real reason for this was
1) """""Realism""""". In that games were taking after movies/TV in visual design, and muted colors or as retards in film call it "color correction" was rather in especially in the 00s. This did help draw in non-videogame players and expanded the market by helping with the perception that videogames could be "adult".
Pic related as an example.
2) Performance. A lot of games actually operate at a color depth of only 15 bit (or even lower), which is only 32k colors. Your screen may be at 24/32bit depth, but the game is not. Its faster to process shaders when the calculations involve smaller data points. If you make your colors muted for marketing reasons, you can also get performance benefits from it too.
