What do you think about Daikatana?

>> No.9801840

I think it was alright, don't know why everyone freaked out about it. Partner AI was shit, limited saves were retarded but other than that a decently fun FPS

Romero didn’t really do much of interest after he left id

>> No.9801875

I think the start is very funny. It’s one of the more unwelcoming starts I’ve seen for an fps from its era.
>starts in super green swamp
>robot mosquitos and frogs with hilarious noises
>giant mosquito boss, turret placements
>poison blaster that feels like it’s puking at you after it impacts
It’s not ”the worst” for anyone who genuinely wants to go through it, I even started enjoying the gun after a few upgrades, but for others it’s going to be a rough first impression.

Ambitious
Ruined by Save gems and AI that could not tie its own shoes.
Not that bad a game, but after all that marketing and hubris surrounding it it had to be the second coming of Jesus - and it wasn't.
Had Romero been more humble it would not have been teared to shreds so much.

Honestly I like it more than SiN, Soldier of Fortune, and Kingpin. Don't get me wrong, it's a complete fucking mess, but I can't help but admire the ambition.

GBC games really suffer from being

Played it with the fan patch years ago. First episode was still a ridiculously shitty slog, second episode was okay in comparison, and after that it actually gets pretty good. I wonder if theres a way to just start from the second episode.

I think the main problem holding it back was the decision to have a completely new set of weapons & enemies in each episode. Many games dont manage to create even one well-balanced and satisfying arsenal + complementary bestiary, and they tried to create like 5 different ones without the time or the budget to do it right.

I played it for the first time recently with the 1.3 patch, and I enjoyed it. Having a new set of weapons and monsters for every level is cool, and keeps it fresh, and the level design of Episodes 2 and 3 is really great. But the first two levels are probably some of the worst in the history of FPS. Romero is a retard for not stripping them or at least moving them somewhere else because it's a terrible introduction to the game.

Literally the reason i never bought it or played it, never saw something shilled so much in the gayming magazines. Same with MDK

>> No.9804539

There's a lot of really good ideas in it but the execution was awful. If any game needs a remake of any sort it's Daikatana.

My biggest FRUSTATION in games.... EVER.

+ Fucking great concept (time travel with 4 different eras, weapons, enemies and stages, mixing samurais with cool tecnoshit).
+ Hype at 1000% (Romero was a cringw poser, but gamer media, and many gamers, bitted it).
- Total disgraced execution: 3 years delay, terrible gameplay, shitty design, dated technology, retarded plot, software full of bugs, total disgrace. Music was the only great (and wasted) part (still listen eventually).

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jaIT817EkXM

In the hands of a Nintendo, Capcom or Valve, could have been kino, but was just a terrible and sad wasted potential.

Also, never trust that son of a bitch again.

Never knew that was the idea behind it. I always assumed it was just Doom^2. So does that mean Timesplitters: Future Perfect is this concept done right?

>>9806664
As I heard it explained, yes, the studio went under, people lost their jobs. But Romero made out like a thief. He burned investor cash, not his own, and payed himself on top of it all. So as much as I’d love to believe that he had to live out of a van after the fiasco, he actually made money off it.

One of the stranger things about all this is the name of the game.

While 大刀 is an alternate spelling, it is usually written as 太刀. And it is pronounced "tachi," with "daitou" as an alternate pronunciation. Not "daikatana." That is not a word.
