How many times do we have to go over this? Horii, Sakaguchi, and Toriyama came up with the basic idea during a trip to the US. Horii then wrote an outline for the story that was then revised and expanded upon with many other scenario writers, of which Kato was just one. In the end, it was a group effort where everyone involved made significant contributions, and pitting one against another, pedantically arguing over who did the most, stems from a childish tendency to attribute all the glory for something to just one person. Kato’s seemingly self-aggrandizing statements (I say seemingly because I don’t know how accurate those translated excerpts are) in interviews don’t help, but the way those statements have been taken out of context and blown up, Chinese whispers style, by people on the internet over the years is ridiculous. I’m sure Kato himself would be shocked to hear everything people in the Anglophone world are giving him credit for.
