Oh wow. The very first post in the thread managed to be of the one video game that seriously spooked me. Sure I was a kid at the time, but do you remember the intro to Postal, when you booted it up? With the weird gnarling imagery and stuff? Really made me freak out. The wailing, screeching metallic sounds and what not. Postal 2 is more fun, but Postal (1) was more hardcore.

Silent Hill, these early games at least, were always too artistically beautiful and poignant to ever be truly scary to me. I was appreciating the artistry in the games too much to get fully absorbed into the horror aspects of them.

I felt that Silent Hill 1 used the artistic direction in a very spooky way. Like finding Alessa's desk in the school and seeing that all the other kids moved their desks away from her and scratched hurtful words into it. SH1 is full of stuff like that which makes me sad and that somehow makes it feel scary and uncomfortable.

not music, but there's a part in Half-Life 1 in the "on a rail" segment where you can just wait in some of those dark hallways and hear very, very distant, barely audible screams or moans, to the point you're not even sure they're there, super spooky

Fun fact, I never beat this game because this music terrified me so much that even playing the game on mute frightened me. I used to get nightmares from that special screen filled with those scary sonics and that creepy message. Hell, it still gives me goosebumps.

Silent Hill 1 is the scariest game of all time. People who don't understand this probably never will. It's scarier than Fatal Frame, Siren, Kuon, etc. Nothing comes close. There's no middle ground with SH1, you either think that it's mildly spoopy like RE1 or it gives you fucking nightmares
