Redpill me on the VMU - did it ever ascend from gimmick status?

Nope, it was kind of detrimental to the system in my opinion

Nope, it was definitely detrimental to the system.

Probably the reason why the controller has only 4 face buttons.

>> No.9784234

Eh not really. It’s fun to have the little screen on the controller but I could take it or leave it

Do you like Tiger Electronics handhelds? Its worse than that. Still played that stupid rock dodging minigame from Skies of Arcadia for the extra items though.

Resident Evil 2 in theory but ideally you’d be playing the dark and couldn’t read it.

Even when you can read it, it's a stupid gimmick. Pic related had backlight yet I've hardly used it. There is a reason no other company tried to copy VMUs. PocketStation wasn't part of the controller.

i wouldn't mind trying that 99x crash game.

Not really, no. It was never used for anything interesting. I would have just preferred a memory card with more storage.

If you play Resident Evil, it lets you see your health and ammo status without pausing.

If you play Sonic Shuffle with human players, it shows you your cards instead of showing them on the game screen which puts you at a disadvantage against others.

That's all I got.

It was very useful in many games including Resident Evil 2, 3 & Code Veronica.

No.

I also had one (V2 orange) and loved it back then and well still do of course, but looking back I think Microsoft had the most sovlful keyboard and mice in 90s and early 2000s.
I think XP and before Microsoft keyboards and mice were amazing. I think they lost it during Vista era and never gained it back.

Ran out of batteries real fast and they were some weird type you never had around the house and from what I remember had some stupidly difficult to remove cover screw to make it worse

>> No.9787084

>>9787070
It doesn't even need batteries unless you want to play minigames on it and it's just a single phillips head screw on the back it's not hard to remove at all

It was deterimental for the system, yet I loved it, it was such a fun gimmick, looking down and seeing some animation or some info about the items in your inventory and then taking ot out and having some minigames to play, I miss these fun gimicks to be honest

>> No.9787093

>>9787089
Continuing my post
It would be not deterimental at all if some better optimisation was had, it kinda fucked the controller a bit and the battery life was too short, i’m not a fan of having the cabale at the bottom of the controler

In Tech Romancer you could complete VMU mini games to unlock the game's content faster. There really wasn't anything like it at the time--a handheld and memory card all in one. In 1999 the world was still disconnected and the first smart phone wouldn't arrive until 2007. And so that added connectivity, while a gimmick, deepened the connection between player and their data. In Phantasy Star Online you could only have one character per memory card, which in turn made that card especially valuable to you if it contained your main.

You guys didn't live in that time I guess? It was cool having a mini-screen right in your hands and tamagachi was fucking BIG. It was actually useful and added to the fun of the DC (of which I had and played a ton of with a healthy library).

>Redpill me
I'll discuss the Sega Dreamcast's VMU for the sake of nostalgia, but don't care to convince you of anything. "Redpill me" is such a stupid, worthless expression used by parrots and lowlifes. You guileless internet strangers don't matter to others enough to need to be convinced of anything in this or any lifetime.
