Plutonia has difficulty levels implemented, UV was designed by the Casalis so that it would be harsh and always give them a tough time (and sorta getting at each other in a brotherly kind of way), but HMP scales down some of the really mean ambushes considerably. Try it if you find the gameplay too frustrating on UV.

Also consult the standard curriculum:

>> No.9784265

>>9784247
Plutonia has some trap rooms that are nasty to this day but you'll find it's subdued compared to today's arena-to-arena setpiece levels
Also, the levels are very small, more compact than vanilla doom 2 mostly
also the difficulty selection >>9784261, hurt me plenty can almost feel patronizing with the infamous revenants guarding the map 1 rocket launcher being replaced with a couple pinkies. Ribbiks also tones things down to a "casual playthrough" level on HMP, he underplays the effort put into HMP and HNTR but it's still more than most mappers bother

I'M YOUR MOMMA

>> No.9784317

>>9784247
Its difficulty isn't bullshit, though. There's always a strategy for getting out of every fight relatively unscathed. Always. The fights/traps are cleverly designed like that.
It will rape you raw, no lube, if you go in blind, sure, but once you learn the levels there's not a single fight/trap in the game which is "almost impossible" to get through on UV as long as you're capable of formulating effective strategies for them.
Even Go 2 It is relatively unthreatening for those with a good gameplan for it.
I think the nastiest trap in Plutonia is probably the hell knights/revenants that teleport in on map 15. You can deal with this by triggering the teleports then getting the hell out of Dodge and escaping quickly to the west side of the map, but there's a chance you get blocked when attempting this. This is maybe the nastiest trap in the game and yet with this strategy you'll get out relatively unscathed more times than not.

>> No.9784320

>>9784317
>escaping quickly to the west side of the map
...which you'll want to have cleared out ahead of time, which is somewhat counter-intuitive regarding the key progression. But yeah. Clear out the west side before going for the yellow key to give yourself a place to escape to. Strategies like this are what can get you through Plutonia without taking a ton of damage.

I spoke years ago to one of the guys working on that remaster and he essentially told me that they hit a brick wall of progress reverse engineering it without the source code. Like all the textures have already been completely redone and tons of work had already went into it but something happened that they could no longer move forward. And then "Plan B" was decided which would take a very long time to do was the only option. He didn't say what that was but I think it's pretty clear that it's decompiling the games source code. Which takes like 2/3 years if you look at any decomp project.

The guy didn't say that specifically but it's pretty obvious, right? They've hit something that's a complete halt so they just start grabbing the source code on their own private server or something to finish the game.

Has anyone here had success on Linux with getting music to work on Q2 RTX? The console only tells me "No Ogg Vorbis music tracks have been found, so there will be no music." Where exactly do I need to put the files? Seems to be some version of prboom, it's actually installed by default on GarlicOS.
512 lines MAP21 runs fine until the big final fight where it slows down to half-speed (on UV, on HNTR it more or less manages to keep up).

I discovered some cache size option which I increased from 16MB to 64MB, which seems to help considerably with modern maps (it'd often drop to < 1FPS with the old setting). Some of the smaller maps from Going Down and Ancient Aliens now seem to run smoothly, the larger and more detailed ones not so much.

This really got me the first time I played it because I thought the liquid in the center of the room was damaging. You're given a radsuit just before, and restricting that space would make sense given how the monsters tend to get stuck on the stairs and push you in. It makes me think it's an intentional misdirection/humor given the tone of the wad overall but It's subtle enough it might just be weird design.
Despite that I found map 10 before it to be a lot tougher so it seems strange to get stuck there. Good luck on the rest.

Quake's development was brundlefucked in a lot of ways, the reason it is this gorgeous and weird mess is that it was originally going to be an open world medieval fantasy RPG, but because development stalled and they were running out of time, they decided "Fuck it!" and retooled what they had into another shooter.
Romero wasn't really happy with that compromise at the time, though I always got the impression that he was fairly proud of the final result.

They really all should be pretty proud of Quake, because rarely does a game with troubled development, where the entire direction changes course like that, as a massive compromise and resignation, turn out something which is actually good.

Ehhh Quake is good but it's kind of unremarkable. It is a gaming landmark when it comes down to the ways it pioneered 3D graphics and arena shooters but there's just not much to talk about in regards to the actual game itself. It's just Doom with a few neat additions and stellar atmosphere. I'm still kind of disappointed that the original concept for Quake didn't come into fruition and that id never really manage to break away from the Doom formula. The fact that Quake turned out good really should be of no surprise, since it would be really hard to fuck up something that they were so familiar with.

That’s why it was slowed down.
That's a really disappointing design compromise. Has there ever been an attempt to make this kind of "intended" faster Quake mod?

Yeah, Overdark Underbright was actually pretty good. But Copper didn't really add anything to it apart from making Spawns less obnoxious.

As a standalone mod, it's shit, and the people who swear by it always come off as obnoxious and snobbish. It changes the balance of the game in ways that vary from negligible to annoying.

But the ultimate downfall of it is that it doesn't really make the game better or worse, it just makes it very very slightly different. Worse, the people who like it will insist it's the only "true" way to play Quake and that it should be mandatory for every single mod. It just comes off as incredibly petty and snobbish.

I should try more mapsets intended for it, I didn't run into this with Dwell or when I went through UDOB awhile back. They seemed to compensate for it with appropriate placements.
My general impression is that no one cares much about ammo placement in general. Nearly every set I played last month had regenerating ammo pickups.

I like Civvie 11's videos for the most part. He does decent videos, has a decent sense of humor for the most part and he does a decent job of putting to words on what makes a classic first person shooter tick. I also kind of like that he made fun of /vr/ briefly.

I've also been warming up to some Decino videos here and there. They're a comfy watch and expanding the knowledge of inner workings of DOOM is always fun.

That said, no e-celeb will ever be "our guy", they can be entertaining, they can be informative etc and you can like them all you want but they're performers, their videos are their products and the viewers are their customers. Another point that Halo fucks up on is the enemy attack types. There's a lot of projectile-based attacks but the projectile speed is too fast and you're too slow for you to generally dodge or do anything about so a lot of it may as well be hitscan.

I still think the Bungie Halo games have decent writing. Obviously it's nowhere near the same level as Marathon's writing (2 and Infinity set a very high bar to reach,) but Halo has its own serving of interesting lore, namely the relationship between the forerunners, humans, and the religion of the Covenant. My favorite parts are probably from H3's terminals, there's some real Durandal-esque stuff in those.
The post-Bungie Halos irreparably fucked the original canon that I actually like and they aren't even retro so I'm gonna end it at that.<div class="xa23b"><span class="xa23t"></span><span class="xa23i"></span></div>

It's pretty much on par with Disney Star Wars or nu-Trek, especially including the feeling of being completely lost on the plot if you haven't CONSOOOOOOMed every new book, comic, or shitty mobile game. With the Bungie games you really only need whatever is in the game manual or on the back of the box to figure out what's going on and even then not so much.

Hell, 343 lore is so convoluted that a throwaway line in Halo 1 has gotten contrived into Master Chief being the reincarnation of alien space Jesus because he won the RNG lottery on a genetic seed written into humans a gorillion years ago.

The biggest sin that 343 lore does is they retcon the forerunners, who in the original games were actually humans, which adds a lot of depth to the Covenant-Human war. In the new games, they were retconned into being their own distinct race, which is pretty lame imo and it also makes a lot of dialogue from the original trilogy make zero sense.

It all goes back to a split within Bungie and 343 teams. The core Bungie teams wanted humans to actually be Forerunners, but the guys who formed 343 wanted Forerunners to be aliens and humans were their inheritors. The latter faction won (since Bungie fucked off), but it complicates a lot of things. I still don't think they've adequately explained how that doesn't contradict Guilty Spark's line from CE "Last time, you asked me, if it was my choice, would I do it." without what >>9790137 says in his spoilers. Base levels tend to have reactor rooms, armouries, various things that make them look like a place that was once a useful functioning UAC base, and have some sense of progression from the base entrance in the first level to the obligatory portal to hell. Monsters and pickups fit the room, chaingunners attack from sandbags and pillboxes, and the berserk pack is usually in some sort of medbay room. Hell levels are usually abstract rooms that happen to have demons and ammo pickups in them. There are definitely hell levels that look like a home turf for demons like the city and castle in hellbound map24 and 28, and some themes like archviles being bookworms but they are the exceptions that prove the rule
And from a purely gameplay perspective hell levels either dial down the monster count to compensate for demons having more hp than hitscanners and imps like in doom episode 3, or go into slaughter territory, both of which are going to alienate somebody

I kind of struggle with the aesthetics on how to place ammo in hell levels. Usually it feels best just to neatly line them next to walls in some wall alcove. A motif I overuse is a doomguy corpse surrounded by bunch of boxes but I can't really think of much other sensible ways to do it.

Goddamn HL is such a mixed-bag.
When the levels are fun and you're far enough in that you got weapon variety its a blast and feels like the culmination of 90s shooters, but then you spend the next while doing poorly designed platforming or having enemies chip damage you.

Because his best levels are for Doom 1, not 2, and I'm sure he loves it more as his child. Also he's more familiar with designing encounters for original weaponset where you don't have to jump through all the hoops if you don't want the player to use the same particular weapon for 99% of the game. We've been through this like 200 times already.

Pistol starts or just not giving the player an SSG very often.

That’s a huge jump. Weapons are similar, without the double barrelled shotgun the next best weapon after the chaingun and shotgun is the rocket launcher.
Also is that the fandom wiki? Not the Doomwiki?

Ah, if you're going to port them over to VR you might want to take a look at the anim_correct() function and its shortcut, am(), in AI.qc. Basically am(<number>) is placed at the end of each animation frame function, with the number indicating what kind of animation it is. This allows for things like anim_mod and the time dilation powerup to affect monster animation speed.
There's also PD3 turret stuff to consider, but I'm going to be making some changes to that anyway.

Exactly, how many maps for D2 has he made, including post-release?
You can't force player to pistol-start every time you can, but no one likes it, and you can't balance it for both pistol-start and continuous at the same time.

Personally I like D1 and its wads more, it's slower so you always have time to appreciate the atmosphere and the level design, and the author has to think about it as well because you can only do so much with D1 combat. of course it only works like that in theory

Pistol starting has gotten really popular, so I’m not sure about that.
>and you can't balance it for both pistol-start and continuous at the same time.
You can, it’ll just be more lax on continuous than a pistol start, as it usually is. Either way, I’d rather have a map made with pistol starting in mind that can be played continuously than one that can only be played continuously and can’t be pistol started.
