i was shocked at how bad 2 was in comparison to how good 1 was. double shotgun doesn't make up for shitty level design

Doom 2 has some awful filler levels, it also feels like just an expansion on the first doom. Same enemies, same sprites, a couple more enemies and one more gun and done.

Of course D2 is better, what kind of question is this? D2 is the standard, D64 is just a side story port.

>> No.9779582

>>9779407
It has the best level design of any official DOOM game (not counting Plutonia and Sigil). The Lost Levels were also pretty good.

64 is fine but Doom 2 is miles better

Doom 2 bestiary makes Doom 1 hard to go back to. Commandos, Arch Viles and Pain Elementals enhance the gameplay drastically.

64 has nice ambience and atmosphere but level design is mediocre compared to id's own stuff and remade sprites are awful.

>> No.9779605

>>9779407
64 is OK with some unique mapping concepts and lighting that makes it stand out from other entries.

However, it suffers from many cons such as:
>Lack of reloading frames
>Lack of Revenants and Arch-Viles
>Half as many textures compared to the original game(s)
>Game feels overall "slower" due to N64 hardware

Personally I rank it a bit lower than the other entries because it just doesn't feel as good to play play (especially true if playing it on the original N64 hardware.)

D64ifier on the other hand is shaping up to be something incredible...

>> No.9779691

>>9779407
Nah it's very overrated. People like it because it's released recently (all things considered) in a good format and looks different (which was novel in 90s). It has too many brute force puzzles, gameplay is quite slow. Give it 5 more years and people will start shitting on it.

Doom 2 is like the standard of Doom games - monsters diversity, super shotgun, open ended levels and the difficulty is just right. It's perfect for both first time players and occasional revisits.

For me doom1&2 are tied and I don't care about the 64 one. ps1 or pc is best 32x one looked ok too. Never tried it though

Too many barons but it's still the best Doom game.

both have bad level design in parts, but 64 is in more recent memory. doom 64's map 8 is far more frustrating than any doom 2 map.

there's also one section requiring precise movement and timing where i have no idea how one would do it with a n64 controller. granted, ive never played it on the n64, only doom 64 ex

both are worth playing, but for doom 2 i would honestly say try some custom WADs if you dont like the level design of the base game. 64 is different enough to play through fully.

>> No.9779737

>>9779407
No. People overhyped it for years because it was stuck on the N64 and was relative obscure when it came to Doom's legacy.

I like the original much more than DOOM II, but I still like DOOM II more than Doom 64 (except for all the fucking Cacodemons in two, holy shit). I played a bit of Doom 64 when it was new and fully played it last year, but I just don't understand the hype. Some of the music was really atmospheric, but overall I don't see how it's any better than the first two. I'd probably play it again before Doom 3 however.

Doom64 looks amazing. The game is really pretty, love the light engine, and the sprites, even though cacodemon having arms are dumb.
The final battle in Doom64 is much better too.

Does Doomguy die on the cover? I just don't see any way he gets out of that unscathed.

>> No.9783425

yes, the cover depicts Doomguy's canon death at the end of episode 1 and the rest of the series, including every custom wad is a dying dream

This is a hard one since they have their fare share of garbage levels. If we're talking about the cartridge version of Doom 64, then Doom II wins by default.

It's the same one from Pyspy, he finished it a few weeks ago. So now they just need to be put in the game.

>Does Doomguy die on the cover?

I don't think that's ever been addressed by the original team. But considering in the game he lives to tell the tale, unlikely.

The second marine in the back is supposed to suggest the innovative-at-the-time multiplayer co-op that shipped with the game btw.
