Same. I just didn't try hard enough. Got to the third campaign and I have to skirt around the danger zone trying to complete my mission. Jinking doesn't seem to do much in this game since you fairly slow strafing. On the other hand I just bait out missiles from SAM sites and blast them with a hellfire missile.

I needed this game after all the 2D action platformers I just played. The title theme rocks as well.

Getting good with the strafing helps a lot. Also knowing where most of the enemies are. You want to kind of strafe around them in a circle while shooting. The limousine mission in the first stage is probably the hardest, so it's good to kill all the baddies along the path of the limousine before that mission, but from memory I think some of them appear specifically for that mission, but having less of them by killing the other ones makes it easier. When it first came out in '93 or whenever I was pretty young and rented it a bunch of times and I didn't realise how important the strafing was and didn't really understand how it worked properly, it makes it a fair bit easier

>> No.9766952

>>9766239
You do go down somewhat easily. SAM sites take you out within 6 hits maximum, if you're in a danger zone enemies do more damage and I swear they're more resilient as well. You have to end up baiting missile/rocket fire from enemies while moving then when they are in their reload phase hit them back in retaliation. Anything with AA guns you just volley your cannons and hydras at them and can often win that DPS race quickly. Also picking up guys and bringing them to landing zones will net you armor, a 100 armor per guy so a load of 5 guys will get you near max armor and with the capacity upgrade to carry 6 you can get maxed armor. Strafing doesn't feel as good right now in Desert Strike since it seems slow, but I think they've made you go faster in later entries thus you'll be relying on it more.

Same anon. I change my reply. While I understand the game better, it's too fucking hard.
>>9766000
>Jinking doesn't seem to do much in this game
Yeah why is this even in the game when it's worthless even in the first mission. I thought with time I could cleverly switch between jink and rotation to circle-strafe, but it doesn't fucking work. The only way to take on enemies is to crawl them onto the edge of the screen and try to sneak up on them, which is annoying because it eats up fuel.

Honestly this game is begging for twin stick controls. Seems so easy to do with modern SDKs, but afaik there have only been two attempts, one canceled and one unreleased.

>Future Cop LAPD
There's a lot more to that games development than just getting started as a Strike game
>developed primarily for the PS1
>but the game devs used Mac clones with PCI slots as development hardware since by then PS1 devkits are just regular PCI expansion cards
>they port the game to Mac as a side project with gameplay remaining intact but a lot of the FMVs ripped out and with awful menus
>EA has absolutely no interest in Mac games at all, in fact the devs previous game Shockwave 2 was a 3DO game with a Mac port that ended up being released years later exclusively as part of a budget multipack by another publisher
>the devs are fully aware of how EA feels about Macs so they also port the game to Windows PCs in hopes that it'll end up getting released as a hybrid disc
The final PC port is kinda janky and a pain in the ass to get working on modern Windows, play Future Cop LAPD on PS1 instead unless you're looking to play network multiplayer
Every PC copy of it has the Mac release still on the disc even if it's not advertised on the cover or disc itself

Oh man, absolutely loved the Strike games as a kid. Had Desert on the Amiga and then the Genesis, and then got the rest in order. Went back and replayed them all a few years back, and I'm actually amazed that I managed to clear them all as a young kid when they first came out. Dunno if we just had a higher threshold for difficulty and repetitiveness, but some of the levels and missions were absolute bullshit. Nothing like losing all of your progress in the final mission because your helicopter got shot down and instantly destroyed anything you were above (Looking at you, embassy rescue school bus) or the target vehicle drove off the map because you didn't have enough ammo to bypass the ridiculous armour.

I think Jungle was the best of the original trilogy, despite Desert being the most soulful. Jungle also had some of the most bullshit levels (Special mention to the nighttime jungle POW rescue level) and although it tried something new with the other vehicles, only the motorbike I think particularly worked. Hovercraft was pretty shitty in the second level, especially when trying to pick up the boxes of plutonium which was temperamental as fuck, and I usually just used the glitch to jink the commanche through the bridge in the top left corner. F117 was fun in a go fast kind of way, but the fact it was instant death if you hit any of the taller objects that littered the level including objectives married with the screwy targeting made it tedious.

I think Urban was the most refined, and I don't recall any particular bullshit. The foot sections weren't great, but again they were trying something new. Just didn't seem as soulful as Desert and Jungle.

Surprisingly though they will held up well and were enjoyable to replay. I can't say the same for Nuclear and Soviet, which were amazing at the time but really not aged very well and feel very janky. Future Cop LAPD is still good fun, and the deathmatch was great fun even if it could get very heated and competitive.

Continued, Red Zone on the Genesis is worth a go if you want some more helicopter fix. It's not isometric but top down which can cause some perspective problems, but still a good game. Also has quite a lot of on foot sections but did a better job of them than Urban Strike did.

This game is highly underrated and takes a lot of design cues from the Strike series as well, the FMVs are great too.

I could have said more attention to detail and more passion put into it or any other synonyms that cover the feelings of the above rather than saying soulful but felt the usage was adequate.

I appreciate that the term soulful has been raked through the dirt by this point by overuse on /v/, but I don't think that means there should be an embargo on using the term at all.

I have to say, that New York level in Urban Strike is pretty cool. San Francisco looked ugly with the clouds, but the entire ground being skyscrapers was cool. Then essentially going from hot spot to hot spot in rescuing people was thematically the coolest out of the rescue missions. I like how the gun fires rapidly in Urban over needing to mash it and I like that the sequels give you more hydra rockets to really go in battles hitting hard.

Not sure of it because I just got through Desert Strike so I'm now use to the games flow, but Urban seems to be easier. The on foot missions so far are just okay and mostly revolve around getting enemies on the edge of your screen and you shoot them out of their aggro range.

Love going across the USA. I'll probably end up playing Jungle after this. I'll say I do like Desert more than Urban right now, but that New York level was neat thematically. I just beat Vegas and left off on the final campaign.

Man the final mission in Urban Strike was completely phoned in. It's almost all flat, and it's gray. Just the objectives and enemies are on the map. At least it was a stress free mission and I was able to beat it on the first try but nothing as great as the 4th campaign in Desert Strike.
