Replaying it now since i never beat it. Biggest issues are slow combat from the long spell animations and the bloated cast of forgettable characters. Other than that I’m enjoying it. I hated it when it came out because I expected a trigger sequel.

Chrono Trigger was a babby's first RPG for people who don't actually like RPGs, very short with easy "action-y" combat. All the Chrono Trigger fans were pissed off that Chrono Cross wasn't similarly babymode and complained about it

Chrono Trigger has the best JRPG combat in the SNES. And I wouldn't say it is particularly easy, you just don't need to grind, as it is arguably structurally perfect. Most JPRGs are shittly-paced grindfests.

People reacted negatively to Chrono Cross because they wanted more of Trigger, not because Cross was some kind of 'hardcore video gamer benchmark'

chrono trigger is much harder than cross, i feel like you have to be trolling

>> No.9767003

Chrono Cross has piss easy combat, unavoidable nonrandom encounters with extremely slow battle transitions both into and out of combat (it prompts the player EVERY TIME to use spare elements! Why!), it has 40 party members but only the dragoons have a real subplot, you only go to one other reality that is not very different from the main one, the story doesn't have a clear throughline until the very end of the game (and the pacing suffers for it), and the plot shits its pants in the last few hours by exposition dumping on you with a large number of plot threads that are quite frankly irrelevant (why even tell me that wazuki is lynx? It doesn't change anything)

it's not an awful experience but it's definitely a messy one. it walks face first into problems that chrono trigger solved effortlessly. I can't even recommend playing it without fast forward or else you'll want to blow your brains out clearing out the navel/marbule.

>> No.9767016

>>9765567
its like three hours long. it only really ties up its own small scale narrative but the player is going to be left with questions as to the specifics that the game doesn't go into (about the setting and Kid)

Which Chrono Trigger version should I play? Been meaning to play all the chrono games. I finished the SNES version when I was 12 and I heard that the newer releases have a lot of additional content and some relevant to the story. Are they worth playing?

Why do people complain about RPG difficulty? Part of the appeal of RPGs is that you can earn your own difficulty setting by grinding. If you actually think Chrono Trigger is easy, just run from battles!

>> No.9767432

>>9767051
no not really, the new content is pretty ass. if you're fine with the new content being much lower quality than the rest of the game then you can apply a bunch of fixes to the steam port, otherwise emulate super nintendo. (I personally recommend using the MSU-1 high quality sound)

>>9767409
Not him but the problem with Chrono Trigger's difficulty is it's too easy even without grinding. I think there's a case to be made for "choose your own difficulty" but there should at least be somewhat engaging combat if you just do a normal amount of encounters and never grind. That's only true in Chrono for the Spekkio fights and the very end of the game if you do none of the endgame sidequests while the rest of the game's combat isn't challenging in the slightest.

>> No.9767597

>>9767552
>there should at least be somewhat engaging combat if you just do a normal amount of encounters and never grind
No, if you fight every battle and never run, you should be leveled precisely to the point where each boss encounter is comfortable. Difficulty is a punishment for being lazy and running (or, by your standard of Spekkio being "somewhat engaging," a reward).

>> No.9767610

>>9767597
If by "comfortable" you mind "mind-numbing" then sure. Chrono Trigger's combat is probably the worst part of the game.

Enemies do much, much less damage in Chrono Cross than they do in trigger. There is only one fight in chrono cross that actually does relevant damage, and it's the mastermune fight. Chrono Trigger, easy as it is, has like five fights that do relevant damage.

You can't recast an element in Chrono Cross, all revive elements are hidden.
It's not uncommon to have a very limited access to revivals, the damage is balanced around how punishing it is to have a character incapacitated.

>> No.9767809

>>9767784
The amount of very efficient party wide healing in the game is ludicrous, theres a yellow, a green one, and a white one just off the top of my head, as well as major single target heals. While you are right that having a character die is a big deal, it's something that basically never happens.
