He is kind of right though. Outside the presentation (finishers, wealth of training modes, ingame readable bios, the entire backstory, etc), it plays AWFUL.

Maybe if it didn't have that retarded "need meter to do specials" thing, it would've been better. (you can taunt endlessly with that, and some moves work without meter, they just drain it - Slash has a forward+MP throw like that)

Unlike over-the-top gore from games like BloodStorm (which can be fun). EC's gore is disturbing.

>> No.976675

>>976563
I fucking love BloodStorm because of it's stage. Usually levels in fighting games are boring as hell, it's just a flat plane with a different background. But in this game the stages were interactive. You could jump in the background in the flying fortress, impale your opponent on ice picks in the snow world, and my favorite: break a part of the ceiling in the cave level which would fill a whole on the side of the stage; usually if you fall in that whole you would be instakilled, but if you broke the ceiling first you would safely land at the bottom where there was an entrance to a secret fight. So fucking cool, I wish more games did stuff like that.

Another cool thing: killing your enemy as a torso by squirting blood on them. Radical!

>> No.976701

I'm always amazed at EC's sprite work. I see so many specialty sprites and tons of frames for those specialty sprites that are probably just used once and never again, and they're all animated really well with lots of frames. MK is very sprite-repetitive in comparison that uses the same positions, stances, etc. over and over again. Some real love and work went into this one.

>> No.976834

Holy fuck, some of those fatalities are the most gruesome and callous I've ever seen even to this day. Like that cowboy guy just shoots you in the fucking face, no questions asked. Mortal Kombat, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct? They got nothing on Eternal Champions.

I like the idea of Eternal Champions but frankly I think the game plays like ass. The spinoff games like Chicago Syndicate were even worse.

Eternal Champions was a big deal on release and heavily marketed. at least I remember the Megadrive version was. But being released amidst a zillion other fighters at the time it has been relatively forgotten, and the fact it never had any sequels.

Just so there is no confusion I'll do a quick run down and review of these games.

First there is Eternal Champions for the Sega Genesis which came out in 1993. It's a meh tier fighting. The controls were kind of clunky and you had to use up meter to use the special moves, which made them hard to implement an kind of impractical. The game did have some interesting modes and cool as hell finishing moves. There are 9 playable characters in the game plus a boss character. Each character has their own stage and each stage has it's own finisher called an Overkill (except for the boss's stage).

6.5/10 has potential

Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side came out in 1995 for the Sega CD, and is a sequel/upgrade to EC. It's an awesome trier fighting game. The controls are much smoother, and each character has new special moves and only some of them use meter (and those that do use less of your meter), so combos and implementing special moves are more practical (pretty much fixing what was wrong with the first game). There are now 4 new characters plus 12 unlockable characters (5 joke animal characters and the final boss plus 2 that are different moves sets of the pre-boss (who was the boss of EC)). 5 new stages and 3 new unlockable stages. Each stage now has 2 finishing moves, the Overkill from EC and a new Sudden Death (except for the 2 boss stages (which can't be played at in other game modes besides the main Contest mode)). Each character (except for the animals and bosses) has a finisher they can do to their opponents called a Vendetta. Every character that isn't unlockable has Cinekill finishing move that can be done to them that's a 3d cut scene. On top of that the music is a higher quality and it has neat 3d cut scenes.

8.5/10 lost gem

>part 2

In 1995 they released a spin off called Chicago Syndicate on the Game Gear. It's a crap trier beat em up. In this game you play as Larcen from both EC and EC:CDS. It's boring and repetitive with only like two types if enemies. You can do a couple of different move that reminisce of the other games, but for some unknown reason you can't face left (at lest you have a backwards punch)

2.5/10 seriously why can't I face left

The final installment to this series is another spin off called X-perts. It came out in 1996 for the Sega Genesis. It's a shit tier beat em up. In this game you play as 3 characters who you switch back and fourth from. You play as Shadow (from EC and EC:CDS) and 2 new characters. The game is very slow paced for a beat em up and just really awkward and you just have a few basic moves. The game is at least different from most beat em ups in that you're fighting your way to different objectives on different floors of one big building, but it gets very monotonous. There are only a few types of enemies (like 3 I think). You can do a finishing move or a interrogation move with each character that I've never done and hear it doesn't work right anyway.

2/10 going out with a whimper
