Imagine if RE4 was a horror game like the remake of 2. Imagine what the series would be today. RE4 could have been OTS and a proper horror game at the same time, but instead they made it an arcade looter shooter where the obstacles between you and the next objective is just hordes of enemies which drop loot. So sad.

you guys are obsessed with re4 not being the game you wanted. No matter what re4 did that genre was dying. The sales numbers are out there. Deal with it. Accept it and get over it. I like survival horror games but most of them are simply not as fun to play as resident evil 4 is. could they have possibly scaled some of the action back a bit? Yeah probably. it is what it is though. I looked at the resident evil 2 remake and never played it. It looked generic. If nothing else resident evil 4 has some nice art direction. Some areas are actually pretty to look at in a somber way.

cope and seethe I guess. Old school survival horror games are handicapped in certain ways by their own genre conevntions. Many of them rely on solving puzzles (which are often either obtuse or contrived) which is tedious or boring especially on subsequent play throughs. There isn’t much of a scare factor on a second or third playthrough so the horror aspect isn’t relevant after you beat it once. usually they have antifun frustration gimmicks in place like limited inventories or other convoluted mechanics to make the game harder than it needs to be to make you feel more helpless. most of them are worth playing once or twice but the best ones are flawed masterpieces at best.

I wish that RE0 and CVX let you play as Rebecca or Billy in the same way that you got to play Jill/Chris/Claire/Leon in 1 and 2. Imagine not having to babysit the AI in 0 and having item boxes; and imagine not feeling like your dick is cut off when all your momentum as Claire vanishes in CVX.

I'm not sure why people have a hard time grasping this. Even 4 wasn't a smash hit at release. The GC and PS2 sales combined were in the same ballpark as RE3. It took several years and ports before it finally met and exceeded the sales 1 and 2 did on PS1 alone back when the horror fad was at its peak.

Always thought it'd be cool to have something set in the summer of '98 before the mansion stuff. Maybe a missing hiker who survived a dog attack and a park ranger out there looking for them in the mountains get stranded as night falls. I don't think there's enough material there for a whole game but it could be a fun Outbreak-style scenario. You could probably string a handful of similar ideas together and have a cool little prequel game.

Umbrella Office Simulator. You're a regional Risk Manager & need to clean up the constant outbreaks being caused by different departments effectively being at war with each other. Also you have to send orders out by fax machine & the closest one is separated from your desk by three crests and two different colored card keys that you need to borrow from Frank in Accounting.

There's one of those weird Japanese audio dramas that's set a day or two before the mansion incident. It came out not long after RE1 and has Jill investigating a tiny mountain town where an outbreak happened because some edgy satanists drank blood from an infected snake in a ritual. Replace her with a different character and it could be a basis for an interesting scenario.
