Not even trolling how is this one of the best games? There's nothing to do except fly through rings. The happiness system is autistic and the game eats over half of the save data room on the whole machine. This game is pretty on par with something like Wii sports. Something that's fun for free

It didn't, because the Playstation didn't. There are no games on the Playstation that reached more than 10% of the userbase.
The Saturn didn't need a hypersuccessful mascot.

Same reason why anyone played Pinball. It's all about score. Nights is a very pure classic gameplay form of early 3D videogames - it's not really attemping to tell a story or create complexity to 3D engines, it just wants to engage as much as possible with its mechanics and time attack it while aiming for top score, not unlike what arcade playstyle used to be like in early 80s. Down to its core, it's a very simple game. That being said, if you don't like it, it won't click. It's like asking what made Gattaca so popular when you can't bear to play it for more than 5 minutes.

Ask yourself this, do you remember when NiGHTS was released, or anyone who had it? Or did everyone have Crash or Mario 64 instead? ... or Tomb Raider, or Bubsy 3D...NiGHTS was still one of the best selling Saturn games behind Virtua Fighter 2, but it seems to be mostly remembered as a curiosity. Burning rangers is even more obscure. NiGHTS still had some re-releases and a sequel on the Wii. I like the game. I played it when it was new.

It's True, Tomb Raider was released on the Saturn in the UK a few months earlier than the PS1 game. But the PS1 and PC versions had way more success. The PC game even had a Gold re-release with additional stages.

Man, the Saturn in the US was laughably bad. I got it in the 2000 and every single game I had was Jap. They should have not even fucking bothered if they weren't going to try at fucking all in the US.

Genisis and DC on the other hand were the opposite. I had 99.99% NA games.

ITT: People who don't understand NiGHTS.

It is one of the most creative games ever made and a work of genius by Sonic Team.

Just as Albert Einstein innocently asked "What would a beam of light look like if you were travelling at the same speed next to it?", Sonic Team asked some fundamental questions that delve into the heart of console gameplay:

>what would a platform game be like if there were no platforms?
>what would a platform game be like if you didn't need to jump?
>what would a platform game be like if you couldn't die?

NiGHTS was the answer to these questions.

People say the Saturn didn't have a Sonic game but NiGHTS was it. But whereas Nintendo took Mario platforming and made it 3D, Sonic Team kept the 3D but ditched the platforming. NiGHTS is just Sonic without a ground to run on!

NiGHTS is nothing less than the zenith and swansong of platforming, a total deconstruction of the genre that dominated the 8 and 16 bit era. FUCK, I love this game so much even though the product Sets released is unfinished and barely more than a tech demo. I FUCKING LOVE NIGHTS

Crash Bandicoot GameFan review.

The end of 1996 was a crazy time for 3D gaming. In North America, there was the release of the N64 and Mario 64, Sony had Crash, Tomb Raider became a big success, NiGHTS was an interesting addition too. But the poor distribution of the Saturn, higher console price, made it a less popular choice than a PS1 with Crash. later in 1996, there was Wave Race 64, and Shadows of the Empire. 1996 was the year that 3D gaming went mainstream.

I will always find it funny that sega decided to 100% focus on selling the saturn on their weakest market (japan) and it was the most popular console there for lonly like 2 years and in the end barelly sold more than the N64 which was more focused on the US market unlike the saturn.
Amazing how they went from a playerbase of 20M consoles sold to only 2M, in just one generation sega of japan killed their brand because of pure jealousy the US divison was better than them.
