has there ever been a game which sequel was released on a console from a previous generation?
like:
>x game debutes on ps2
>x game sequel is released on ps1 only
and I'm not talking about ports here

closest thing that sprang to mind was gargoyle's quest 1 being on gameboy and 2 being on nes

Megaman and Bass came out in the late 90's, after a bunch of the Playstation ones.

>Mega Man 8 (Sat/PS1)

Immediately thought of Road Rash 3. Released on the Genesis in 1995 but was actually the fourth in the series, as Road Rash 3DO came out a year prior on the then next-gen hardware.

Black/Matrix went from Saturn to Dreamcast to Playstation, had a sequel on PS2, and then a GBA prequel that was remade on Playstation which was the literal last Japanese game for the console.

It depends on if you need it to be exclusive to the previous gen console.

Street Fighter Alpha is released for PS1/Saturn.
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is released for SNES/PS1/Saturn/PC.

There was a Klonoa vollyball game on the PS1 that was made after Klonoa 2 on the PS2. It has all the PS2 characters in PS1 models too which is neat.

Do Yoshi and Yoshi's Cookie count? Both were obviously made to cash in on Super Mario World, despite being on the NES.

>> No.9736582

Donkey Kong Land came out before Donkey Kong Country 2. So for a very brief time it could be considered a sequel exclusively released for an older system.

>> No.9736591

You could argue this happened with Super Mario Bros. 3 and one or two other Famicom franchises that hopped to the FDS for the sequel and then back to carts for the third entry. Add-ons aren't exactly "next gen" but they are intended to give the impression that they are.

>> No.9736692

>>9736664
Yeah, it is after 8, in every sense of the word, and is probably one of the best examples of what OP is looking for. It was conceived of as the consolation Rockman for kids without a PSX, and within the game code there's even text referring to itself as "8.5"

Another Capcom example would potentially be Mighty Final Fight, since it came out even after the SNES release of FF2. That said, it isn't really so much a sequel as it is a retelling of the first FF.

nah, road rash 3 is. the only problem it was named as if "reboot" didn't exist.
the series titles went pretty wild:
road rash (1991 - mega drive, amiga + backports)
road rash 2 (1992 - mega drive + backports)
road rash (1994 - 3do, later pc, psx, saturn + sega cd cash-in backport)
road rash 3 (1995 - mega drive)
road rash 3d (1998 - psx) < this one killed the series because it was bad
road rash 64 (1999 - commodore 64, just kidding, might be called a backport of 3d though)
road rash jailbreak (psx + gba port) < best in the series but no one bought it

Sky Odyssey for PS2 doesn’t have an official sequel but there’s a PS1 game that came out after called Rescue Copter and it has level intros that are EXACTLY the same as Sky Odyssey. It’s odd how similar they are. I’ve tried to correlate the credits to see if there’s any overlap to explain it but there isn’t. If some connection does turn up them it might be an actual example of what OP is asking for.

Not quite what OP is asking but a very strange situation.

Wario's Woods came out on NES and got an upgraded port on SNES the same year. However today Nintendo NEVER acknowledges the SNES version exists and only releases the NES version over and over.

I mean, the game itself is barely remembered on its merits. It's more well-known for being the last licensed NES game released in NA, therefore it's the version that most people are likely familiar with. Or something.
