You are tasked with creating a modern "Championship Edition" version of the classic Mario Bros. How would you do it?

Aside from updating the visuals and such how would you turn the game into an online, semi-competitive yet true to the original's concept game for Nintendo's online EShop or even a retail title if you think it can reach that scope?

You're developing it /for/ them, though. For their handheld that has terrible online support.

Give it a graphical update, add some more modes and stage layouts, officially add the super jump from the GBA versions, throw in an online leader board maybe some online co-op/2 person single play and a nice gimmicky extra where a person can create the layout and control what obstacles pop up.
or
you could go DK 94 with it and add a little storyline while the game changes throughout 100 stages

>four death row inmates all hooked into chairs with IV's
>set before a big screen where they all play a special modified four-player version of Mario Bros
>players are injected with a very small amount of poison, like 1% of a lethal dose, every time they die in-game

>competitive Mario Bros.

I can't even fathom how that would be done. Do you mean like the versus mode that was in Super Mario Bros. 3? Making that competitive, I wouldn't even know how to go about such.

8-16 player local (fuck online with nintendo its worthless and less fun in general) on bigger levels

Fits right in line with Nintendo's fun party games that are designed to be dicks to friends for fun.

Super Tower Opera Extra rules: Game ends when either one player gets a Game Over or the third stage is cleared. If both players are alive when the third stage is cleared, the player with more lives wins. If both players have the same amount of lives, the player with the higher score wins.

- Different stage layouts.
- Add that super-jump Mario can do in Game Boy Donkey Kong.
- Some ability to pick up flipped creatures, or other players, and throw them around.

The most important idea IMO would be to have the ability to dash as well as change direction midair.

Increase complexity to raise the skill ceiling. Longest surviving player wins.

No way to complete levels, monsters gets faster the longer you survive
Queue of monsters visible in the pipeline, so skilled players can plan ahead better
Some means of manipulating the level layouts, eg. bumping the same bit of floor twice breaks it temporarily
Some means of manipulating the flow of monsters, eg. switch you can hit to force the pipe to immediately output the next monster
Some bonus for killing multiple monsters at once, eg. spawns powerup items
POW block respawns
