They are much better as an introduction to the genre because they are shorter, faster paced, without sacrificing quality. Basically less of a chance you drop them. There's also less noob traps.

Super Metroid and SotN are twice as big as Zero Mission / Aria of Sorrow respectively. Although Aria of Sorrow's soul system imo is better than SotN combat system

ocarina is good.
super metroid is great.
sotn is good for the first playthrough.
banjo / ape escape are fun - so is klonoa but it is very easy.
paper mario is about as decent as a jrpg can be (along with chrono and pokemon)
dino crisis 2 is okayish - don't expect too much.
luigi's mansion is novel, but too tedious for me to play these days.
prime and hl2 are alright.
