Do you guys have any old videogame websites that are still up and fun to look at to share? I think a lot of us here have vague memories of weird unusual little gaming websites being popular before things became so centralized.

>> No.9720532

Does GameFAQs count?

I can't think of any that are still around but still look enough like they used to for it to be nostalgic. The old Working Designs website was a fun place.

It counts sure, I remember using the neoseekers forums a lot (which has a negative reputation now, but this would have been around 2005 so the old forums from them are entertaining to go through) back then there were also fan made tiny websites too dedicated to just one game or franchise. I just wonder how much of that stuff is still out there to look at for nostalgia.

YTMND is allegedly up still according to some people which also is kind of period correct. Newgrounds still exists but those are just fun mentions and not really pertinent to the thread.

Last year I pulled out my gamecube and started playing a bunch of games I hadn't played in years. I went to gamefaqs for a bunch of them and ended up using someof the same faqs that I used 15-20 years ago and kept getting deja vu when I was reading them and playing. It was fun.

Does anyone remember Game Genie Code Creators Club? That was a website I took advantage of from time to time.

There were some early rule 34 websites that catered to FFVII girls and the like. I don't remember their names but it was my first exposure to porn of video game characters and it made me the man I am today.

There was a ton of pokemon websites in the last 90's and most of them had easily accessible pokemon hentai. I thank god everyday I somehow didn't grow up to be a weab because I damn sure jerked off to pictures of jesse getting fucked by a tentcruel when I was like 12.

This reminds me of how ROMs were distributed back then. Before goodROMs you pretty much just found random websites that had a handful of games up at a time. There weren't any ways to download entire sets and nobody had the bandwidth or HDD space for that anyway. Plus emulators couldn't play most games. Publishers were still mostly in the dark about it so you'd just type "Link's Awakening rom" into Yahoo and it would take you to a Geocities website that had it right up on the front page.

Funny you mention that I had the same thing happen this month but for an obscure RTS pc game, I think the guide was from like 01 or something. It felt good.

Are any of the old groceries or angel fire websites up still that hosted peoples little fan pages of games they liked? They were like little digital shrines

>>9720658
Doubt it. But that's exactly what I'm remembering. The Castlevania Dungeon is still around. That's pretty ancient and in the early days was where you could download roms for that series. It obviously looks very different now but from the name and the content it still has that vibe of an old school fan site.

Off the top of my head, i remember zelda fansites and mario flash animation sites that would also have sections just listing every piece of Mario collectible from back in the day.

Use to poke around a lot on Starmen.net pre-Mother 3 and also Metal Slug Database which i think may no longer be up. Had news, sprite database and hentai.

Forget the actual name, but it may have literally been called Video Game Midi Database. Discovered some stuff like Live A Live while browsing through the music.

For old shops, I used Knights Discounts for cheap 3DO games and NeoGeo Pocket games back when they were being liquidated that you could get there for like around 4usd. Also got my Pokemon Mini from them. Packrat Games was another, sold homebrew Atari 2600 games and was my first introduction to new games for old systems after first on a whim buying a new Odyssey 2 games they were selling at a retro game con i went to in the early 2000s.

I guess the Smash Bros Dojo also back when that was being daily updated with Brawl info also counts.
>>9720629
Ive coomlected the majority of the games ive wanted so I havent been rom searching in a long while, but is that not how it is now? Like did they crack down on stuff to the point you cant just google search for a nintendo published game rom and get a result right away?

What was the website from about 1996-1999 that would let you vote on what you thought the best game at the time was? You'd cast your one vote and they would put out a weekly chart. You could see where your favorite game ranked each week and at the end of the year. Games that peaked at #1 and spent 50 weeks or peaked at #2 and spent 100 weeks on the chart would go into the Hall of Fame.

Hardcore gaming 101
It used to be the best site for spending hours reading about games and comparing systems. Really knowledgeable and smart folks.

Then they started writing books and stopped giving a fuck about the site about 5 years ago.

Yeah, they are long gone.
The podcast is bizarre, because I listened to one episode out of curiosity and it sounds like they don't even like games whatsoever, more so the need to act as a historian.
Overall they're fine for surface level material and should be used as a gateway to other credible sources. I'm not gonna complain that they have a page up about The Scheme or whatever. But understand the insights on basic game design are very shallow, which people seem to struggle with. Like any passing knowledge about the subject and you understand they're just spouting BS. I know the STG community has had issues with getting game facts completely wrong. Maybe they were always bad and our standards were just low. I don't hate em though. Better to have that gateway than nothing at all.

HG101 is fantastic for getting a digestible understanding of an entire franchise from a source that isn't too "in the weeds" like you'd get from a dedicated fanbase. With some games you can get lost trying to understand how the games relate to each other. It's great to be like "I know nothing about Shin Megami Tensei. Let me check HG101" and have it be easy to understand. There's really nothing else like it.

>What happened with John S? Isn't that the writer of the Untold History books?
shortest tl;dr I can make: John S put up a highly controversial interview with Metal Gear Solid 2 translator Agness Kaku. this interview brought heat from her former employers and was taken down within days, leading to Streisand effect and mass mirroring. afterwards, John hired Agness and her sister as translators for the interviews he would do with Japanese developers for his first book project. then, something unclear but really stupid happened while they were in Japan. Agness' sister got fired by John in a dramatic manner, Agness realized that the HG101 interview got her blacklisted from the industry, and John apparently claimed an allergy to wireless communications and loitered in the hotel room for days on end without getting anything done. afterwards, everyone sued each other and John flew to France to avoid getting served (didn't work). I don't know how the lawsuits ended because I lost interest.

HG101 were prominent at a time new games journalism was the big idea being pushed everywhere. they were better than THAT certainly, but our standards were indeed very low and something barebones and reasonably comprehensive was refreshing compared to galaxy brained "reviewers" like Gillen or Icycalm.

Some "vegan" decided that because -technically- you can save 1m in your commute through bypassing main freeways and causeways that means it's a good idea to zigzag through backwoods, single-lane country roads where there's nowhere to pull over, or stop for 50-100 miles.

And even if you tell it you don't want that route, it will constantly try to send you on it, and not even tell you it's reverted back to the "fuel-saving/time-saving route"

Sorry. Not-/vr/.

It's not the "vegans", it's the eye in the sky coming to terms with how you can't be a god in a world subjected to the third law of thermodynamics. Over time, systems get lossy and increasingly failure-prone, even if they were designed by competent and forward thinking people. This stuff won't ever get fixed beyond someone slapping on a bandaid, because future-proofing cybernetics is literally a step up from squaring the circle. I wish I had something positive to say here to finish this post, but there's just no way in hell things will get any better. We're on borrowed time, and in the end we all just get fucked.

And FUCK endless scroll. Now, if i want to go through the archive of something, my options are to either never turn my computer off so my position isnt lost, or remember my position and scroll ALL the way back to it. Or, more commonly, just give up. Websites today really do not want you reading old content, they want you always on the newest thing. Even if that old content might have interesting content that you want to see. News sites even put up scary red text warnings like "THIS ARTICLE IS OVER X YEARS OLD".
