how serviceable is Windows 10 when it comes to retro gaming? I'm on 7 right now, is there a reason for me to upgrade if I mostly play stuff from 90's and 00's?

Windows 10 sucks. I couldn't get Mystery Case Files 6: Dire Grove to run on it. The older MCF games strangely do work.

I am still with Win7. Took a look at Windows 11, it forbids the user to install a software outside their appstore. I know you can turn it off, but what the fuck is that? The OS has two os three interfaces for settings, the old one, the new added on 8 and a new made for 11. kek

Stick to win 7

It's pretty bad. As usual with Windows, every update means worse retro-compatibility.

I have it and it fucking sucks ass, don't do it. Stick with 7.

win10 is better with emulators

It's good. Literally click and play. Lying faggots like the above need not apply.

which ones and what's the reason why?

Retroarch.
not only that, but some indie games as well.
I don't know, but win10 enterprises worked flawlessly with every game I had.
also modern games don't work well with win7

stick to 7, if you really want to upgrade install win 10 LTSC instead of the regular version

doesnt really matter
set up a seperate machine for windows XP is the way to go

I've been trying to get Win7 going, but one of my stumbling blocks is trying to inject a NVMe and Intel Optane drivers in. It is hard to find them for the old OS now. Have any links?

Do NOT upgrade. Had Win10 for like several hours (yes, hours) before I got pissed off by the poor backwards compatibility and went back to 7 immediately. Ballmer, go eat a bag of dicks.

obviously
but my 12 year old pc died and there's no way I'm buying anything used anymore
luckily there are still boards that work with win7 and 30XX series does too

You'll have to disable Game Bar in W10 right out of the box, for one.
Otherwise, this "feature" will have a pop-up notification every time you launch the emulator/game.

Other than that, you'll undoubtedly run into missing DLL errors for D3D and Visual Studio Redistributables, prompting a quick Google search to get antiquated DirectX and specific Visual C++ runtimes.

There's other tweaks for disabling the other unnecessary bullshit that will bog your system down (e.g. telemetry),
see: https://wpd.app/

t. former loyal W7 user up until my hard drive died, bought a new one, and made the move to W10 Workstation Edition.

What the hell are you smoking? You don't need to make any changes to install soft outside of their app store.

this.
Microsoft needs to either bring back Vista Aero or pick up where they left off with Longhorn before the Beta stage for Vista.

using nvme is your problem, i tried, not even putting nvme drivers on the win 7 works

I run everything through dgVoodoo2 and it werks for me.
One problem is that some disc-based DRM is broken but I normally used no-cd patches anyway.

What games are played using this? I've heard of it plenty of times but have never used it. I think I missed that era of PC gaming. I played DOS games as a kid, then mostly played on consoles, and didn't really play PC games again until the mid '00s.

You should upgrade because you need security updates, that being said. Consider Linux with emulators and VMs. If you are an advanced user you can pass a GPU directly to the Virtual Machine getting near native performance. Search for VFIO and PCI-E passthrought

It converts glide and directX 2-8 games to directX 11. It fixes performance and graphical errors that show up on modern windows and has extra features like forcing vsync, antialiasing and custom resolutions.
It's not perfect though. Some games break like you're running them in a bad emulator, but almost every game I've tried worked 100%.

The PC version of Tomb Raider 1 uses that, right?
Anyway, good to know. Thanks.

>> No.9718068

Depends on the sort of games you're playing. If you're just using emulators, then just about any OS will work. Doesn't fucking matter.

I've been using Win 10 for years and constantly play new and old games. I have no idea what the fuck this whole thread is on about. I have absolute zero trouble.

>> No.9718132

>>9712730
They changed too much shit around so now there's even less compatibility with old games, even if they were Windows 7 releases.
Of course if you're on W10 then you can take advantage of new solutions like PCem (very good virtualbox that can emulate most PC hardware from the 90s and 00s) and dgVoodoo (patches old 3dfx and directx games to work correctly on modern drivers), which is how I've been playing old stuff.

>> No.9718558

Most stuff works fairly alright, though a bunch of games do need fixes that can be found on the PCGamingWiki. You also need to activate DirectPlay in the programs/features panel and install the DirectX/XNA Framework/VCRedist AIO packs to make sure no shit like that is missing for games that don't include them.

There's pre-customized ISOs of 7 out there which already have USB3 and NVMe drivers baked in which you might like.
Search up Windows 7 Updated v4 on Archive for instance.

I'm actually considering downgrading from 10 LTSC and back to 7 on my dual boot. The only reason I had to go to 10 was Rising Storm 2, and now it's more or less dead. I have the windows partition and the files I want to keep on separate drives, and I have a PS/2 mouse and keyboard in case, but I'm a bit hesitant to do it. I don't want to fuck up booting up linux, and I don't know where to find all the needed drivers and updates. Doesn't help that I also don't have a reliable disc drive on hand. I know this is better off being asked at /g/, but since I found this thread here, what should I do?

That is a shame, even building with era appropriate parts, the support has disappeared from devs. A lot of the knowledge and software of the time has disappeared already.

>>9718584
Thanks! This is what I am looking for as it is a key component in getting the time machine going. I wonder if it will be aligned when installed to the metal.

Could always make your Linux drive the main boot drive and just let GRUB pick up the Windows boot loader so you can boot into it via GRUB.

>> No.9720810

>>9720792
Well, that is what I'm doing right now. Linux has always been the primary boot, with grub acting as a way to switch. I'm just kinda worried if I install 7 now, maybe it would override grub or something. It's been a while since I installed an OS, so I might be overthinking it or misinformed.
