When does FF7 even start giving you gameplay "for real"? I'm at a stage past Cloud's bath rape / crossdressing, and so far the game feels like one large scripted event with 5 minutes of gameplay between every new plot sequence. This is getting tiresome.
While we're at it, is FF8 the same?

I was told that FF7 starts with little exploration, but I didn't think it lasted for so long. I asked a simple question: when does it give you more or less freedom and gameplay sequences for longer than 5-15 minutes.

it's not a movie game, but I'm coming to it after Phantasy Star 4, and just holy shit. there hasn't been a single proper "dungeon" yet. virtually no equipment choices to speak of, reduced to buying different bangles. all the materia combos I've found boil down to casting Lightning + All on enemies. and yeah, while we're at it… is ATB even good? I don't see much point in the system, but not like it's bad or something, it's just whatever. you'd think FF7 would make it iconic, but really I've never seen ATB discussed much anywhere.
I must note that I always played mostly gameplay-focused RPGs before. but even with that said, I don't think I've ever played a game that has had so little "real" gameplay early on. it all feels like glorified tutorial so far.
and no, MGS has gameplay, fuck off.

>> No.9713437

>>9713403
ATB is good but it triggers people because they think that it's cheating when the game makes them act under pressure. ATB was a selling point when it released but since 95% of the audience just sets it to wait it went extinct. I use active in every game that offers it but I'm in the minority.

No other game felt as big as FF7 in 1997. Just a gigantic, well designed world and tons of cgi cutscenes and cloud as a protag spoke directly to the hearts of edgy young boys. The movie-game portion ends after disc 1 for the most part.
FFX does everything FF7 did but better, and both are better than the shitshow FF became after 12.

The voice acting in FFX is good. It’s the script written by Japanese turboautists who can’t into emotion desperately being performed by the voice actors that can come off as weird, and I know the only thing you are thinking of is the Titus laughing scene, and because of that scene everyone says “muh bad voice acting”.

Probably, so it's less a best-to-worst t
ranking of FF games and a most-popular to least-popular #1 favourite list, so just cause VII made second doesn't necessarily mean it's the typical persons 2nd favourite since that's not what they were asked. Using preferential voting could have alleviated this but there is the possibility of a Condorcet paradox.

FF1 wasn't very big in Japan during the Famicom times. It's a #63 best selling FC game, which isn't terribly high. but each new installment sold more than the previous one until FF7. That's probably why you see that in that list in >>9714931, FF6 > FF5 > FF4 > FF3 > FF2 > FF1.
The only exception where sales don't reflect the order is likely VIII, but I guess the reasons are obvious, the game being a bit of a black sheep.

The game was legit amazing in its presentation with a decent story, cool setting and great cast of characters from the party to the villains down to minor characters like the Shinra Manager. Plus great soundtrack and the right amout of flashiness and easy to understand gameplay. There wasn't really anything like it in 1997, even PC stuff couldn't really match it in that regard.

The ending portion of disc 1 after the Temple of the Ancients leading up to Aeris' death is incredibly well in how it's presented and I can't think of a lot of big story moments in vidya that come close to the level of genuine kino from it. The tension of Cloud struggling to stop himself from killing her, Sephiroth just casually doing it instead, her theme kicking in when the White Materia starts bouncing and continuing through the subsequent boss fight and ending scenes and the way the characters (especially Yuffie) react. For pure storytelling and presentation, very little in vidya matches the end of disc 1. Especially not Naughty Dog garbage or all other attempts at creating "cinematic experiences" through video games.

>Wikipedia numbers say 700k
it says 600k, 700k is what it sold in the West. also, there's a quote:
>Initially, only 200,000 copies were to be shipped, but Sakaguchi pleaded with the company to make 400,000 to help spawn a sequel, and the management agreed,[11] then the original Famicom (NES) version successfully shipped 520,000 copies in Japan.
And yes, they later released 1&2 on a single cart, which further sold 60k. 520k could be an earlier figure, as time passes old games may add some minor sales numbers.
>Holy based, how did Konami manage to run this series into the ground so quickly?
To be fair, I think during Super Famicom era in Japan the 3rd party action games largely lost in popularity. Out of the top 20 best-selling SNES games, 10 were RPGs, and 7 were Nintendo 1st parties. This was the trend with the whole top 50. Arcade-style action games like Contra, Mega Man, shmups, etc. lost popularity and in general sold ok but weren't huge hits.
